railroadclass= 8F| The Great Western Railway (GWR) 2884 Class is a class of steam locomotive designed for heavy freight work. They were a development of the earlier 2800 Class. The 2884s differed from the original engines in a number of respects. The most obvious one being that a more modern Collett "side window cab" was provided. In all, 167 locomotives were built. They were so popular with the ex-Great Western crews that the British Railways Western Region operating authorities wanted more of the class built after the 1948 nationalisation. However, this request was turned down in favour of BR Standard Class 9Fs.

Preservation

Nine 2884s were saved from Barry Scrapyard and they are:

*No. 2885 is on static display at the recently restored Birmingham Moor Street station
*No. 3802 is on the Llangollen Railway
*No. 3803 is on the South Devon Railway Trust
*No. 3814 is awaiting a major overhaul on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway
*No. 3822 is running at the Didcot Railway Centre
*No. 3845 location is at Goodmans Yard, Wishaw
*No. 3850 is on the West Somerset Railway
*No. 3855 is awaiting restoration on the East Lancashire Railway
*No. 3862 is on the Northampton & Lamport Railway awaiting restoration
