Kesgrave is a suburb of Ipswich, Suffolk, England.

History

Early history

The town was recorded as "Gressgrava" in the Domesday Book, by the late 15th century its name had become Kesgrave. Kesgrave remained a small agricultural settlement with just a church, inn and a few farmsteads for over 700 years.In 1921 the population was only 103 housed in 20 dwellings. Since then great changes have taken place.

Recent history

By 1988 Kesgrave covered an area of more than 800 hundred acres [cite web|url=http://www.kesgrave.org.uk/faqs/kesgrave-town-council-reference/history-of-kesgrave.htm|title=History of Kesgrave|publisher=Kesgrave Town Council|accessdate=2008-03-01] . The five primary schools in the immediate vicinity of Kesgrave are in order of size and age (descending) Heath Primary School, Gorseland Primary School, Cedarwood Primary School, Birchwood Primary School, Beacon Hill Primary School. Only two are located within the Kesgrave boundaries, however.

Kesgrave has a large 11-18 comprehensive co-educational school. It now has nearly 2000 Pupils. A study for Sustrans noted that 61% of the pupils cycled to the school [cite web|url=http://www.saferoutestoschools.org.uk/index.php?p=CS1|title=Safe Routes To Schools - Case Studies - Kesgrave High School|accessdate=2008-03-01] . This is largely due to the installation of a large cycle lane through the housing estate and along the main road. The school actively encourages walking or cycling and provides bicycle storage facilities [cite web|url=http://www.saferoutestoschools.org.uk/index.php?p=n44|title=Kesgrave High School - How we did it!|date=2005|accessdate=2008-03-01] . The school now has over 1800 pupils (from years 7 through 11 and the two sixth form years). The school has undergone a massive extension in recent years. This has included the construction of a new Creative Media Department, a new Communications block, a PE block and a sixth form block. The school currently achieves average exam results.
