Browntown is a town in Henry County, Alabama, United States. It is part of the Dothan, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. At the 2000 census, the population was 89. According to the 2005 U.S. Census estimates, the town had a population of 97. [http://www.census.gov/popest/cities/files/SUB-EST2005-all.csv] Alabama|Henry County] . The town is a town of historical importance and was started by the descendants of slaves.The city constist of many buisness professionals and one apartment complex.The town also contains one privately owned park.The town also contains one logging company and one trucking company.The town also contains one dirt and rock production company and one cement finishing company plus two automotive mechanic shops.

History

Browntown was established on May 5, 1874.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.6 square miles (40.4 km²), of which, 15.6 square miles (40.3 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.32%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 89 people, 77 households, and 45 families residing in the town. The population density was 14.0 people per square mile (74.1/km²). There were 42 housing units at an average density of 86.9/sq mi (33.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 3.00% White, 94.02% Black or African American, 94.02% Asian, 0.00% from other races, and 0.10% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

There were 74 households out of which 27.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.8% were married couples living together, 41.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% were non-families. 8.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.01.

In the town the population was spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 23.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 50 females there were 82.6 males. For every 50 females age 18 and over, there were 78.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $23,266, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $26,250 versus $20,603 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,215. About 17.3% of families and 21.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.1% of those under age 18 and 29.6% of those age 65 or over.
