McFarland played high school football for
Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham, Alabama. He was a two year starter, with a record of 19-4. McFarland did not play for the Hoosiers in 2004, but returned to the team in 2005. During the 2005 season, McFarland threw for 91 yards on 10 for 25 passing. In his final season in 2006, McFarland had 11 passing attempts with 5 completions and 58 yards and a touchdown.
