Fledglings

Zoey Redbird

Zoey Redbird (originally Montgomery) is a 17-year-old girl of Cherokee ancestry on her grandmother's side who comes from Broken Arrow. Zoey is described as having dark green eyes, olive tone skin, and dark brown hair.[1] Her favorite color is green. At the start of the series, she becomes a vampyre fledgling and moves to the Tulsa House of Night. Zoey is blessed by the Goddess of Night and vampyres, Nyx, who meets her in a vision and fills in her mark, calling Zoey her "first daughter of the night in this day and age".[2] As the series evolve Zoey also gains lace-like markings on her face, shoulders, back, waist, hands, and chest, as she surpasses each obstacle, that set her apart from normal vampyres who are usually Marked only on the face.

In Marked finds out she has an affinity for all five of the elements (air, fire, water, earth and spirit) being the first vampyre in history with such gifts. She quickly befriends her House of Night roommate, Stevie Rae, and through her, Damien, Shaunee and Erin, who become her circle and are accordingly gifted with appropiate affinities.

She is also chosen by a cat, who reminds her of a lioness, and whom she therefore names Nala after the Lion King character of the same name. Zoey first dreamed of Nala, before seeing the orange cat stuck in a tree and rescues her after a Dark Daughters meeting.

In the first book she takes Aphrodite's place as the leader of the Dark Daughters elite group, after vanquishing a group of dangerous vampyre spirits. Against her expectations she develops an uneasy understanding with her in Betrayed, when she begins to suspect Neferet of the string of human disappearances that later develops into friendship in Chosen when Aphrodite helps Zoey with Stevie Rae, with her being the only one beside Zoey whose mind vampyres couldn't search. This causes a rift between Zoey and her other friends at toward the end of the book, along with Zoey's decision to keep her relation with Loren and Stevie Rae's condition from them.

In Untamed, these friendships are renewed with some help from Aphrodite In the book, Aphrodite has visions of two possible deaths of Zoey. Zoey experiences one of the visions in the book, but Damien and Shaunee save her from the Raven Mockers' spirits. She later escapes the House of Night with her friends at the end of the book when Neferet openly admits to Zoey that she has chosen Darkness and kills Shekinah to prove it and then frees Kalona from his prison.

In Hunted, she is haunted in her dreams by Kalona. While outside she is attacked by a Raven Mocker and Darius ascertains that she is to be taken back to the House of Night to survive. As this puts her in proximity to Stark she makes him reconsider his attidude and choose Light. He Changes when he pledges himself as her Warrior. With Lenobia's help, she figures out how to banish Kalona and Neferet from Tulsa, and subsequently performs the ritual to carry out that banishment.

In Tempted, Zoey learns that Neferet and Kalona have returned and gone before Nyx's Council in Venice. She goes to challenge them, but accomplishes little as Neferet makes her appear jealous and childish. Kalona kills Heath, he wanders away from Zoey and overhears him talking to Neferet and Zoey's soul shatters as a result. This causes her to lose all her tattoos except the outline of the crescent moon all other fledglings have. She is reunited with Heath in the Otherworld. In Burned, Zoey drifts apart from the shattered fragments of her soul - Brighid, her strength; A-ya, the ancient Cherokee maiden; her joy and her young self. She starts to fade, growing incoherent at times and forgetful whenever she falls asleep. Stark convinces Heath to move on then walks out of the safe grove to fight Kalona, playing on Zoey's guilt. She calls the parts of her soul back and accepts Stark's oath as her Guardian. Together, they return to the world and have sex in Awakened. They return to Tulsa after Jack's death. At the funeral, Zoey accepts Neferet's plea for forgiveness to placate the public, but she can see through the cover. She later accepts Stevie Rae and Rephaim's relationship, and helps start the new House of Night in the tunnels.

Love life

Zoey has a very complicated love life from the beginning of the book. In Nyx in the House of Night:Mythology and Folklore author Kristin Cast explains in her essay Misunderstood that she intended to create a form of reverse polygyny, as well as emphasize Zoey's need to grow and learn by making mistakes[citation needed].

Along with her on and off relation with Heath Luck Zoey starts dating Erik Night officially. In Betrayed, poetry teacher and Poet Laureate Loren Blake. After Stevie Rae's death and Erik's Changing during Chosen Loren takes advantage of her fragility and convinces her to give away her virginity to him and Imprint with him. Erik walks in on them and angrily breaks up with her. While walking to the ritual, Zoey also learns of Loren's betrayal. This and his consequent death take a great toll on Zoey.

In Untamed she starts developing feelings toward James Stark, a new student recently transferred from the Chicago House of Night. When Stark rejects the Change and "dies" in her arms she realizes she really liked him and questions the reality of "soul mates". She also begins to reach back toward Erik, who leaves with her at the end of the book. During Hunted, Heath resurfaces, straining her relationship once again when she Imprints with him to get blood. Kalona starts invading her dreams claiming that she is the reincarnation of A-ya, the Cherokee woman created to love him. Zoey's injury and further removal to the House of Night puts Zoey in both his proximity and a revived Stark's whom she persuades to return to the Light. He pledges himself as her Warrior and completes the Change.

In Tempted she finally breaks up with Erik, unable to stand his posesiveness and starts to trust Kalona, to both Stark and her friends' displeasure. His killing Heath destroys every such illusion and she throws Spirit at him before her Spirit shatters. Believing his jealousy to be the reason for Zoey's condition, Stark follows Kramisha's poems in Burned to enter the Otherworld and speaks to Heath, knowing that she won't come back given the possibility to stay with him. In Awakened their relationship stabilizes and they make love under the hanging tree

Damien Maslin

Damien is one of the two boys in the group of Zoey's new friends, also a third former. Damien has brown colored hair and deer-like brown eyes and is described as having an excellent bone-structure. Damien is very intelligent, warm-hearted and proudly gay. Damien has an affinity for air. He's described as well built for fencing. He has an estranged relationship with his parents who don't accept his sexual inclination.

Damien has also been chosen by a "blond chubby tabby cat" named Cameron.

He is in a relationship with vampyre fledgling Jack Twist, who arrives at the House of Night in Betrayed and gains an affinity for "Modern Technology". Damien escapes the House of Night along with his friends at the end of Untamed. In Awakened, Damien is devastated by Jack's death but stays true to his friends by following Zoey and Stevie Rae to the new House of Night.

Shaunee Cole

Shaunee Cole is a fourth former of Jamaican/American at the House of Night. She is described as being curvy with high cheekbones, thick hair that falls in dark waves around her shoulders and dark eyes. She has a very close connection with Erin Bates that leads people to call them Twins despite theoir different skin color. Shaunee is very faithful to her friends, but also a bit boy-crazy and a self-confessed shopaholic. She has an affinity for fire and represents her element in Zoey's circle.

She escaped the House of Night at the end of Untamed, along with Zoey, Damien, Jack, Erin, Stevie Rae, Aphrodite, Erik, Darius and the red fledglings. In Awakened, she lights Jack's funeral pyre and follows Zoey and Stevie Rae to the new House of Night. In Destined (Cast novel), she begins having disagreements with Erin after showing sympathy for Rephaim's problems. They break apart and begin to distance themselves from their Twin past.

Erin Bates

Erin is a fourth former at the House of Night, known as a "Twin" alongside her best friend, Shaunee. She has long blonde hair and blue eyes. Shaunee and Erin have a good taste in fashion and love to tease Damien about his love life (or lack thereof) and the fact that he knows too many words that they can't understand. She is very wise, a trait noted by Zoey during her first ritual as the new leader of the Dark Daughters and Sons. Erin has an affinity for water, and is able to call and physically manifest it. Due to her elemental affinity, she is able to draw strength and energy from her element. She can also be described as being a bit boy crazy, like Shaunee. Erin is also chosen by a cat, Beelzebub, that she shares along with Shaunee. Although her closest friend is Shaunee, she is good friends with Zoey, Stevie Rae, Jack, and Damien. At the end of Untamed, she leaves the House of Night with the other students who have managed to escape from Queen Tsi Sgili (Neferet) Kalona and the Raven Mockers. Like Shaunee in Hunted she manages to gain hatred towards Stark. In Awakened, she follows Zoey and Stevie Rae to the new House of Night. In Destined, she begins having disagreements with Shaunee after the latter shows sympathy for Rephaim's problems. They break apart and begin to distance themselves from their Twin past.

Jack Twist

A newcomer to the House of Night in Betrayed. Jack also takes care of James Stark's dog, Duchess, after Stark's death. Jack named himself after the character Jack Twist from Brokeback Mountain. He escaped the House of Night at the end of Untamed, along with Zoey, Damien, Shaunee, Erin, Stevie Rae, Aphrodite, Erik, Darius, and the red fledglings. He is one of the two guys in the group. In Tempted, Zoey states that Jack has an affinity for "the magic of the modern world-technology."[3] He is very emotional. He is also Damien's boyfriend. In Awakened, Jack is killed by Neferet.

T.J. Hawkins

T.J. Hawkins is Erin's boyfriend at the House of Night. When they come back to the House of Night in "Tempted", T.J. is in the school's hospital along with several other fledglings. His hands were torn up which upsets Erin, because T.J. is a boxer.

Red Fledglings

Kramisha

The only red fledgling who is African-American, she was gifted with an affinity of prophecies in the form of poems. She quickly has a bond with the Twins. She is nominated the group's Poet Laureate because her poems seem to tell important things about Kalona.

Anthony

Called "Ant" by the rest of the group because of his size. He finds a possible entrance into the tunnels in Hunted.

Johnny B.

The muscular one of the group. He is very vain and takes an interest in the Twins and Zoey. While they are in the tunnels, Erik is jealous of him, thinking that he might steal Zoey.

Venus

Venus was originally Aphrodite's best friend and roommate before her body rejected the Change. Unknown to the other fledglings, she came back to become one of Neferet's minions. As a result, Aphrodite chose her name to be Aphrodite in honor of Venus. When Venus died, Aphrodite was given a drink by Neferet which caused her to begin forgetting about her roommate. Aphrodite threw the contents into the sink and uses this experience to warn Zoey to do the same after Stevie Rae's death. In Hunted, Venus reveals to the group that Stevie Rae and Aphrodite have Imprinted. Zoey describes Venus as having the type of blonde hair that looked gold and beautiful and this starts a rivalry between them. Venus has a personality similar to the one Aphrodite had first shown in Marked. She also shows an interest in Erik, thus causing the rivalry between Zoey and her to deepen.

Shaylin Ruede

The first red fledgling in history to have been initially Marked in red, Shaylin is a fifteen-year-old fledgling blessed with True Sight. Erik describes her as a petite girl with lots of thick dark brown hair and dark eyes. She has an agile and inquisitive mind, which helps her better understand her gift and very good acting skills, as proved when she pretends to faint when she first meets Neferet so as not to reveal her feeling scared by what she calls Neferet's "dead fish eyes colors".[4]

Adult Regular Vampyres

Loren Blake

Loren Blake is a temporary professor at the House of Night. The professorship is an honorary position awarded to him because he is the current Vampyre Poet Laureate. Professor Blake is unusually young for a Poet Laureate (in actual years he is only twenty-five). His accomplishments are also extraordinary because he is a man and due to the vampyre matriarchal society, most Poet Laureates are women. Professor Blake is incredibly handsome, even for a vampyre, being over six feet tall with a deep and powerful voice. His tattoo is a spectacular design of lightning bolts. He woos Zoey throughout Betrayed and Chosen and plays with Zoey's mind, thus causing trouble in her already complicated life and makes love to her. Erik Night, Zoey's boyfriend, walks in on Zoey and Loren after making love, thus ending their relationship. During the act they share blood which causes an imprint between them and breaks Zoey's imprint with her human boyfriend Heath Luck. When Zoeys friends discover that she has been sneaking around with a professor behind their backs it only furthers her isolation from them. It is discovered that this was Loren's true intent, which he devised with his true lover, Neferet, and that his affections for Zoey were false. Loren is killed at the end of Chosen in what originally appears to be an attack by the People of Faith; Neferet blames Zoey for his death, claiming he chased after her after believing she fled the House of Night, making his true intentions unclear and never to be discovered. He chose his name in honor of the famous poet William Blake. In Tempted it is revealed that Neferet killed him because he wanted both her and Zoey.

Professor Lenobia

Professor Lenobia prefers to be called Lenobia after a famous vampyre High Priestess from the third century A.D.. Her tattoo is a beautiful series of knots entwined around her face. Within the sapphire knotting, there are delicate designs of rearing horses, and is stated to have white blond hair and slate gray eyes. As an Equestrian instructor (Horseback riding Instructor), Lenobia is intimidating at first. She has incredibly high standards and won’t pass any student who doesn’t meet those standards. The successful students in her class are intensely loyal and say that she is "the best." The students who stick with her class also become excellent equestrians. She also has a fondness for Zoey, allowing her to enter the stables to be with her mare, Persephone, whenever she pleases. She aids Zoey and her friends in their escape from the House of Night at the end of Hunted. She has great influence with the High Council of Nyx, since she was well acquainted with Shekinah, and is able to obtain an audience with the High Council of Nyx on short notice. Lenobia is stated to have a silver colored siamese whose name is not mentioned.

Professor D. Lankford

Professor Lankford, who is referred to as "Dragon", is short and is described as "looks like the kind of guy who would be the perfect stay-at-home dad". However, when he is holding a foil, he becomes extraordinary. Dragon teaches fencing, and is the reigning World Fencing Champion and has never lost a match. He’s an incredible instructor and, through the Tulsa House of Night, he consistently turns out expert fencers. He was also Elliot's mentor before Elliot rejected the Change. Dragon’s tattoo is made of two dragons whose serpent-like bodies wrap down over his jaw line. Their heads face each other at the top of his brows, breathing fire on his crescent tattoo. Dragon Lankford's wife, Anastasia, is also a professor at the House of Night (she teaches Spells and Rituals); both play a part in aiding Zoey's escape in Hunted but Anastasia is killed by Rephaim. Although Zoey and her friends are able to accept the Raven Mocker in Awakened, Dragon, still angry at the loss of his wife, refuses to accept Rephaim's new form and turns to Neferet's side. Near the end of Destined, Dragon realizes his mistakes and sacrifices himself to protect Rephaim. In the novella Dragon's Oath, it is revealed that Dragon's real name is Bryan.

Professor Penthesilia

Professor Penthesilia took the name of the famous vampyre Amazon queen Penthesilia when she was marked in the early 1920s. She prefers that students call her Professor P. The written word is Professor P’s first love. She teaches subjects ranging from classic literature to current bestsellers and popular fiction. She enjoys reading, hiking and collects vintage jewelry. Her tattoo is a series of thin, pretty Celtic knots that trace their way down her face and around her cheekbones and has red blond hair and hazel eyes. She has many memories about the Titanic.

Shekinah

Shekinah is the High Priestess of all of the House of Night schools across the world and first appears in Untamed. She is physically described as being tall and thin with mahogany skin, dark almond shaped-eyes, a long, straight nose, full lips and "impossibly long" black hair. Her Mark is in the exact shape of the goddess figure which all adult vampyres have embroidered on their breast pockets. She comes to the Tulsa House of Night due to the slayings of Professor Patricia Nolan and Loren Blake and commands Neferet to never instigate a war between vampyres and humans. Shekinah's overwhelming presence seems to command respect, a fact made obvious when Zoey notices that Neferet's cool facade completely cracks when dealing with Shekinah. She is soon killed by Neferet towards the end of Untamed.

Duantia

Duantia is a vampyre who becomes leader of the High Council after Shekinah's death. She is seen questioning Neferet and Zoey's friends during Burned. Duantia appears again in Destined, where she participates in a Skype call with Zoey, Stevie Rae, and Neferet during a council meeting. She permits Rephaim to begin studies at the Tulsa House of Night.

Professor Patricia Nolan

Professor Patricia Nolan is a drama teacher at the House of Night and is the mentor of Erik Night. Professor Nolan is crucified and decapitated in Chosen, in an attack believed to be by the 'People of the Faith'. In Tempted, it is revealed that Neferet killed her because she got in the way of her plans. She is described as having an "athletic" body and long straight brown hair. No real mention is made of her tattoo except that it resembles a mask.

Professor Anastasia Lankford

Professor Anastasia, wife of Professor Lankford or "Dragon", is an adult vampyre at the House of Night. She teaches Rituals and Spells. In Tempted she dies because her throat was slit by Kalona's right hand Raven Mocker and favorite son Rephaim. "Dragon" made a pyre for her and mourned her death along with her cat Guinevere and his ShadowFax. It is known that she had wheat colored, long hair and her tattoos resembled spirals.

Erik Night

His sapphire tattoos are described as being an intricate series of knots that form a mask surrounding his eyes, which are described as similar to Professor Nolan's Mark before she died. He is known for his acting talents, placing several times in monologue contests and seriously considered to be a future star on Broadway and in Hollywood. He is repeatedly described as being gorgeous looking with Superman-type looks, especially his hair, and crystal blue eyes, as well as friendly and an all-around good guy. He is also a self-proclaimed nerd, with his favorite movies being the original Star Wars trilogy, which he knows all the lines to.

A fifth former (or “junior”) and one of Zoey’s boyfriends until Chosen when he discovers Zoey's relationship with Loren Blake after Neferet takes him away for the special cleansing ritual after going through the Change; when he comes back he finds Zoey with Loren. He used to have a relationship with Aphrodite, but now considers her a hateful and cruel slut. Shortly after he makes the Change at the end of Chosen, he catches Zoey making love with Loren Blake, thus ending their relationship and isolating her from her friends.

In Untamed, Erik begins teaching drama at the House of Night, serving as the temporary replacement of the deceased Prof. Nolan. He and Zoey do a rendition of Othello and kiss twice. Although he attempts to ignore her, he later leaves with her at the end of Untamed. During Hunted, but Zoey soon finds she doesn't stand for his possessive attitude and breaks up with him in Tempted. He quickly moves on to Venus and continues to criticize Zoey because of what he calls her greed for men[citation needed].

In Awakened, his attempt to distance himself from the approaching confrontation by leaving to the Los Angeles House of Night is cut short when Nyx marks him as her Tracker. Zoey sees Erik crying before Jack's funeral and they make up and agree that although their relationship didn't work out, they should still be friends. In Destined he feels the Tracker compulsion for the first time and Marks Shaylin, unexpectedly, with a red mark.

Professor Beverly Missal

Professor Missal is introduced in Awakened, when she introduces herself to Zoey and her friends as the new Spells and Rituals teacher, replacing Anastasia Lankford. At Zoey's request, she takes the group to Jack's funeral while Zoey comforts Erik. Her tattoos are said to be pretty and look like musical notes.

Thanatos

Thanatos is introduced in Burned as a member of the Vampyre High Council. She helps Aphrodite see where the souls of Zoey and Kalona have gone, and later, Stark explains the true situation to her. She returns in Destined as a sociology teacher at the House of Night- being in charge of a special class for Zoey, Stevie Rae, Rephaim, Aurox, the 'nerd herd', and the red fledglings- as well as controlling the influence of Neferet. When Neferet's alliance with the white bull is discovered during the reveal ritual, Thanatos becomes the new High Priestess at the Tulsa campus. She has affinities for air and death.

Sgiach

Sgiach is first introduced in Burned. She is a warrior queen, who once trained the best warriors and guardians from all over the world. She lives on the Isle of Skye, and her affinity is with the island. She controls everything and everyone on it. However, Sgiach was refused a place on the vampyre high council because she is a warrior. When this happened, she withdrew from vampyre society, casting a protective circle around her island. Only with her personal permission is it possible to enter without dying. She gives her permission for Stark to enter, as he is one of the Macuallis clan, a group of guardians who stayed with her when she broke from the high council. In Awakened, she appears as a constant friend to Zoey while Stark recovers, and decides, with the help of Zoey and Stark, to re-open her isle. Her tattoos are described as swords, with intricately decorated hilts.

Adult Red Vampyres

Stevie Rae Johnson

Sign at the border of Stevie Rae's hometown

Stevie Rae is Zoey's best friend at the House of Night, and also a third former. She is described as having big, expressive blue eyes, short curly blond hair and a round face and a cowgirl fashion sense. She is Zoey's roommate, and is from Oklahoma. Stevie Rae came to the House of Night from Henrietta, Oklahoma, home of the Fighting Hens, just three months before Zoey. Stevie Rae is a caring and sweet girl who is often compared to a wriggling puppy who wouldn't hurt a fly. She has an affinity for earth. Stevie Rae is intuitive and also a bit psychic, though upon becoming a red fledgling, these qualities become stronger.

She is able to draw strength and energy from her element. This is one of the major key factors that helped her maintain most of her humainity during her time as a red fledgling until Zoey was able to heal her. Her body rejects the Change in Betrayed and dies. After being brought back to life by Neferet she turned feral and murderous. She also obtains a rather uncontrollable bloodlust and is unable to enter a home unless she is invited by a person that lives there. In spite of this, some of her affection for Zoey remains, leading Stevie Rae to help Zoey with Heath and later, to trust her to save her humanity.

In Chosen, Zoey finds and hides Stevie Rae at Aphrodite's house. One month after her temporary death, Stevie Rae sneaks back into House of Night and is restored her humanity by Zoey and her friends and Changes into a new sort of adult vampyre after drinking Aphrodite's blood, her marks being scarlet red flowers with stems that extend down her face and around her cheekbones. Towards the end of Untamed, she is injured and her blood is used to resurrect Kalona. While drinking Aphrodite's blood to heal, they accidentally Imprint with each other in Hunted. Later she fulfills the role of Blood in Kramisha's prophecy.

In Tempted, she admits the truth about the other Red Fledglings to Zoey. She also saves Rephaim and later Imprints with him, thus breaking the Imprint between her and Aphrodite, when he offers his immortal blood to heal her. Afterwards, in Burned Rephaim comes to her rescue with the incident with the white bull Stevie Rae calls the black bull to save him and is thusly bound to his humanity forever. She decides to break the Imprint by drinking blood from Dallas and try to have a normal life, but Rephaim interrupts them and Dallas runs away. Stevie Rae claims him as her Consort. The following morning Zoey and Kalona return to the physical world and Rephaim leaves her, saying that he can't betray his father. In, Awakened, Neferet drags him to the House of Night, forcing Stevie Rae to accept him publicly and protect him. The goddess makes an appearance and stands by Rephaim and gifts him with a human appearance during the night after which he starts a relationship with Stevie Rae.

James Stark

James Stark is a super sexy sixth former that prefers to be called Stark. He named himself in honor of James Dean's character, James Stark, from Rebel without a Cause. He first appeared in Untamed when Stark transfers into the Tulsa House of Night from Chicago's House of Night. He has an instant connection with Zoey Redbird, but that connection is broken when his body rejects the Change and he dies shortly after their first real conversation. However Zoey, knowing that he may return, attempts to revive him before Neferet, until she is distracted by the near death of her Grandmother. Stark is well known in the vampyre community for his archery skills; despite being a fledgling, he placed first in the "Summer Games"--the vampyre version of the Olympics—ahead of full grown vampyres previous to his introduction to Zoey. Stark's skill comes from his affinity for extreme accuracy and potency, allowing him to never miss his target and making him lethal with a bow and arrow. He admits to Zoey that he accidentally killed his archery mentor with his powerful gift before he understood his power, he kept his gift a secret because he believed his gift was not good and dangerous, he does not want to hurt the people he loves just by misundertsanding his thoughts and aiming at someone else. Zoey and Stark kiss while she holds him as he dies, and that is when she tells him that he will be brought back to life. At the very end of Untamed, he returns as an undead minion of Neferet's, attempting to call Zoey back as she flees. Neferet tells him he can have his heart's desire if he does as she says. He then shoots an arrow into Stevie Rae's chest with Neferet's command, and her blood is used to resurrect an ancient evil, Kalona. Although Zoey's friends believe that Stark is evil, he really is not, because he still does have part of his humanity and doesn't kill Stevie Rae, which he easily could have with his gift. During Hunted, Zoey tries to make Stark see, just like she did with Stevie Rae, that he can choose his humanity over being a monster. Even in his 'undead' state, Zoey still finds herself falling for him, and tries to help him. Eventually, Stark chooses good over evil, and pledges himself as a Warrior to Zoey, which is a very powerful oath that can only be broken by death or release by the High Priestess. In doing this, he becomes a red vampyre with marks resembling arrows, and turns away from Neferet and Kalona. Neferet tells him to shoot an arrow into Zoey's heart, it is then that he realizes he loves her but just doesn't want to say it then, he remembers an earlier conversation with Zoey in which she claims to have given him her heart when they were bound by the warrior's oath. He then shoots the arrow aiming it at where Zoey's heart truly is with him. Zoey figures this out just in time and calls the elements and 'flings' their protective powers at Stark just before the arrow makes it to him, which leaves him laying on the ground and bruised by the power of the elements. After Kalona is gone, Zoey walks over to where Stark's body is, and when she touches him, although he is bruised and scarred he is very much alive. In Tempted Stark and Zoey are in love but neither say so. It is an obvious relationship between the two teenagers. But it is very obvious that Stark is trying not to show his true feelings for Zoey, because he just wants to be the very best Warrior he can be. At the end of Tempted, Stark gets mad at Zoey and walks away, but then Heath overhears a conversation between Kalona and Neferet; Kalona gets mad and he kills Heath. Stark sees Zoey trying to save him but her soul shatters, and Stark starts to cry because he felt her soul shatter, and he thinks that she's dead. In the end it's clear he is in love with Zoey so it's assumed that Stark plans to save her. In Burned, Stark wanted to get Zoey back, though her soul was shattered. He needed to get to the Otherworld, but did not know any way without dying. However, with Zoey's friends' help, Stark found out one way to go to the Otherworld without dying - the Isle of Women. According to Darkness, which Stevie Rae accidentally evoked, "The Warrior must look to his blood to discover the bridge to enter the Isle of Women, and then he must defeat himself to enter the arena. Only by acknowledging one before the other will he join his Priestess. After he joins her, it is her choice and not his whether she returns." Stark, along with the help of his friends, solved the puzzle. The bridge of blood is his last name, Macuallis, and he defeated himself when he entered the Otherworld, which he managed to get to with the help of the Queen of Isle of Women, Sgiach, and her Guardian, Seoras. But when seoras and the queen asks Stark why he wants to save Zoey, he says "Because I love her". So it is given in the story what Stark's feelings are, all they have to do is say them. When Stark gets to the otherworld Stark became face to face with himself (his bad warrior self) and he has to defeat the warrior inside of him in order to become a Shaman. In the end he did defeat himself then, he found Zoey, but also Kalona. Stark then realized what he had to do in order to save Zoey which was to stall Kalona long enough for Zoey to pull herself back together but, Stark was killed by Kalona in a battle in the arena in the Otherworld, but in sight of her Guardian's fight for her, Zoey pulled herself together. Zoey demanded Kalona to give Stark's life back, and Nyx supported her. Kalona did, as a sign of respecting and obeying the goddess. At the end of the book, Zoey and Stark both returned to the real world. Stark was brought back when Zoey kissed him and whispers "Come back to your queen, Guardian. It's all over now." to him. And Nyx's voice rang loud and clear, "...it's not all over. It's just beginning." In Awakened, Zoey and Stark decide to stay for a while on Skye instead of going back to The House Of Night. Zoey and Stark finally admit they love each other, and make love twice. Zoey convinces Stark to use his bow and arrow again.

Dallas

As mentioned in "Hunted", Dallas name was given to him because his parents 'made him' in Dallas, Texas After Stevie Rae dies, she and Dallas have a "thing". In Burned, Stevie Rae begins to have a conflict of feelings about Dallas because of her relationship with Rephaim. After pushing the red fledglings out of the tunnels, she asks Dallas to make love to her, but Rephaim interrupts them before Stevie Rae can break their imprint. This causes Dallas to embrace Darkness and become the third adult red vampyre with markings that resemble whips. He also has an affinity for electricity, which he uses against Stevie Rae and Rephaim before fleeing. In Awakened, he joins the evil red fledglings. It appears that he is the "leader" of the evil red fledglings and is having a relationship with evil red fledgling Nicole.

Humans

Aphrodite LaFont

Aphrodite is a very wealthy and physically beautiful Sixth Former (or "senior") and was originally Zoey's sworn enemy; nicknamed "hag from hell" by the Twins, who also dislike her. She has cold blue eyes with blond hair. Throughout the series, she grows to be Zoey's most trusted ally ever since Aphrodite told Zoey about the death vision she had of her Grandma Redbird and when they start to realize Neferet isn't what she appears to be and they have to find out more. Aphrodite is the only fledgling besides Zoey whose mind cannot be read by Neferet. She was the leader of the Dark Daughters when Zoey first came to the House of Night, as well as the High Priestess in training; however, she abused the power which came with the position, and was stripped of her title by Neferet. Aphrodite is gifted with visions of future disasters, which come true unless someone interferes by using the information obtained from her visions, and is extremely intuitive. For her extreme irresponsibility and recklessness during the Samhain ritual and release of evil spirits that harmed Heath, the role of leader of the Dark Daughters was handed over to Zoey at the end of "Marked" because she was able to stop the spirits. Nyx entrusts the earth affinity to Aphrodite when Stevie Rae dies in "Betrayed", to keep it safe until Stevie Rae is ready to use it once again. At the end of Chosen, Aphrodite's mark disappears as a result of saving Stevie Rae; although she retains her visions she loses her Earth affinity when it is returned to Stevie Rae. Nyx assures her that this is not a punishment; the earth affinity was never truly hers and she just held it for Stevie Rae; her mark was burned away by her humanity in saving Stevie Rae. She later predicts that Kalona will come back, writing out a prophecy in Zoey's Grandma's handwriting. At the cleansing ceremony in Untamed, after Kalona rises, she guides the "nerd herd" away from the House of Night, shouting orders to the group while Zoey concentrates on concealing and protecting them as they flee to the safety of the city's underground prohibition tunnels. During Untamed, she is chosen by her white cat, Maleficent, while at Street Cats, proving that she is still a part of the vamp world. In Hunted, she Imprints with Stevie Rae and has a relationship with Darius. In the poem that Kramisha writes that has the secret to defeating Kalona, Aphrodite represents Humanity, one of the five key elements to defeating him. In Tempted, Aphrodite's relationship with Darius becomes stronger, and she realizes she's falling in love with him. After admitting she loves him, Darius pledges his Warrior Oath to her, promising to protect her forever. In Burned, she truly expresses her feelings and becomes a better friend to Stark because of Zoey's mishap. The further the series progresses, the more of her "warm" self we get to see.

Heath Luck

Heath was Zoey's on and off human boyfriend before she was Marked. At the beginning of Marked, he is said to be drinking frequently and on drugs, along with the rest of the Broken Arrow football team. After accidentally sucking Heath's blood when he and Kayla break into the House of Night, Zoey has an unofficial relationship with him, driven by his fixation on her (an effect of the feeding). Towards the end of Marked, he searches for Zoey and accidentally stumbles into a Dark Daughters Halloween ritual, in which Aphrodite calls dark spirits that try to murder Heath and use him as a sacrifice. The spirits nearly kill him; however, Zoey recaptures the spirits with the help of Stevie Rae, Damien and the Twins while Erik Night defends him. In Betrayed, Heath is captured by Neferet's undead creatures. Because of his and Zoey's Imprint, she is able to rescue him. Neferet destroys his memory of the incident, instead making him believe that he was kidnapped by a homeless person. In Chosen, when Zoey imprinted with Loren Blake, her Imprint with Heath breaks. In Untamed, he is seen with one of Zoey's old friends and decides that he would no longer like to see her for their own good, even though he still loves her. At the end of the book, Zoey calls Heath and tells him to get his family and anyone he cares about underground so Kalona cannot harm them. In Hunted, he ends up going to Zoey to see if she's okay. Zoey Imprints with him once again when a Raven Mocker cuts her, and she needs blood to save her life. Erik gets very jealous and realizes Heath is obsessed with Zoey. Erik does realize though that Zoey is still with him not Heath, but that's not what Heath thinks. Heath also grows jealous of Kalona, Erik, and Stark. In Tempted, after overhearing a conversation between Kalona and Neferet, Kalona kills Heath, causing Zoey's soul to shatter. In Burned, he spent some time with Zoey in the Otherworld, staying with her in a grove to be protected from Kalona. By the end of the book, he decides to fully cross over to the Otherworld, promising Zoey that he will always love her no matter what, and that he will find her someday in another life. It breaks his heart but he knows that leaving her is the best he can do. In Awakened Nyx gives him three choices for his future. He chooses the third, which is being brought back to life as Aurox, the vessel Neferet calles upon. Nyx is proud of his decision but tells him to choose carefully. He ends by saying,"Zo needs me". His spirit returns to earth in Aurox's body, though he has no memories of who he once was, and is under Neferet's control. However, Aurox- although at times a beast- shows signs of caring for Zoey in Destined.

Grandma Sylvia Redbird

Sylvia Redbird is Zoey's Cherokee grandmother. She loves Zoey as if she was her own daughter. Grandma Redbird lives on a lavender farm, and she and Zoey are extremely close, especially since Zoey's mother remarried. Whenever Zoey has a problem she can always count on her grandma to help her feel better. She always calls her the Cherokee name for daughter 'u-we-tsi-a-ge-ya. Grandma Redbird not only loves Zoey, but learns to love the rest of her friends, and they love her too. She remains true to her Cherokee ways, by doing spiritual and cleansing rituals on occasions. In Untamed, she is in a horrible car accident caused by one of Kalona's children and is placed into the Intensive Care Unit, being watched by Sister Mary Angela at Zoey's request. In Hunted she represents Earth to banish Kalona, and at the end of the book together with Zoey, Aphrodite, Stevie Rae and Sister Mary Angela she helps do so by using the simpleness of a blessing. In Burned, Stevie Rae visited her in the Benedictine Abbey, being shown in a better physical state. By Awakened, she is well enough to welcome Zoey at the airport when the latter comes back from Skye. Near the end of the book, she barely avoids the wrath of Neferet when she attends a powwow the same night Linda Heffer is killed. In Destined, she is shocked by her daughter's death and the circumstances leading up to it, but remains strong enough to allow Zoey, her friends, and Thanatos to hold a revealing ritual on her farm.

Linda and John Heffer

Linda Heffer is Zoey Redbird's mother, and John Heffer is her husband, therefore he is Zoey's stepfather. Zoey nicknames him "The Step-Loser". Zoey's grandmother calls him a "turd monkey". Linda has been married to John for three years, after divorcing from her first husband. Linda was implied to be a kind, caring, free-spirited mother until she remarried, when John started to dictate her clothes, hobbies, friends and did not allow her to read romance novels or to wear makeup. Yet she seems to believe he loves her and follows whatever he says, usually putting his wants over Zoey's needs. John is an arrogant and controlling man who hates Zoey and her grandma. He belongs to the People of Faith; a religious group strongly opposed to the existence of vampyres. Zoey considers him a suspect for the murders of Professor Nolan and Loren Blake. Linda constantly chooses her husband over her daughter, thus causing hurt and tension between her and her daughter as well as with her grandmother, who supports Zoey's position as a student at the House of Night. They seem to worry what people will think of them; thus not drinking any achohol in public and worry what the neighbours would say when they found out Zoey was marked. In Betrayed, they are banished from the House of Night by Neferet. John also thinks that when Zoey first got Marked, it was because the devil was in her. They also made Zoey stay at home instead of letting her go to the House of Night. The longer Zoey didn't go, the closer to death she would have been, causing Zoey to escape out of her bedroom window and drive to her grandmother's. In Chosen, Linda interrupts Zoey's birthday outing with her grandmother on John's orders in order to try to change Zoey's mind about her life. As a result, Zoey and her grandmother swear never to speak to Linda again, unless she can accept them for who they are. At the end of "Untamed", Zoey calls her mother and warns her to get to safety. There is no other mention of either of them until "Tempted" ,when Heath mentions Linda decided to have Zoey's long hair cut. In Awakened, it is revealed that John cheats on Linda. Linda leaves him to apologize and start a new life with her mother, when Neferet shows up at Grandma Redbird's house. Neferet intends to kill Grandma, but she is not home, so Neferet kills Linda instead. It is revealed that Linda really did love Zoey.

Sister Mary Angela

Sister Mary Angela first appears in Untamed as a nun and the owner of Street Cats. Zoey, Aphrodite, and Darius are surprised to learn that she does not have any hate against the vampyres, seeing Nyx as another form of a Catholic figure, Mary. Zoey forms a close bond with her, and asks her to watch over her grandmother in the hospital. At the end of Untamed, she takes Zoey's grandmother underground to prevent harm from Kalona as Zoey had requested if they could not stop him from coming to the surface. In Hunted it is revealed she is Spirit to banish Kalona and joins Zoey at the end to help her do so.

Kayla Robinson

Zoey's best friend in Marked, before Zoey was Marked and went to the House of Night. When Zoey gets Marked, Kayla freaks out. The next time they see each other is when she and Zoey's on-again, off-again boyfriend Heath try to break Zoey out of the House of Night. Some unfriendly words are exchanged when it is revealed that Kayla tried to steal Heath during Zoey's absence (by acting like a half dressed slut), and Zoey uses threats to scare her out of the campus. She also starts hanging around with a new group of kids known as the 'bitch squad'. She does not get Heath in the end either, since Heath goes back to Zoey and becomes her human consort.

Travis Foster

An assistant to Lenobia, hired by Neferet as part of her "human acceptance" scheme at the House of Night in Destined. Lenobia, who is used to running her stables independently, gives him a frosty welcome, but the two soon form a bond over their love of horses, especially after she meets Travis's Percheron Bonnie. Lenobia later kisses him but breaks it off, knowing that the age gap would cause significant problems. Travis's previous job was in Colorado and he is considered 'handsome'.

Sons Of Erebus

The Sons Of Erebus are an elite warrior class of Zoey Redbird's world, they enter the book series in Chosen and give their oath to protect the House of Night. In Untamed some of the warriors rebel against Neferet and Kalona and most are killed in the process.

Ate

Ate is the leader of the Sons of Erebus. When Shekinah was killed by Neferet, he led the rebellion against Kalona and Neferet, and although many of the warriors are killed, he ends up working for them and guards the school.

Darius

He helps Zoey and the gang often in Untamed, and is described as young and good looking, with marks that are in a "bold geometric design". He loves Aphrodite, though he initially doesn't know she has been "unMarked" and has become human. He shows his loyalty to Zoey very early on from when he is first mentioned and seen in Chosen. He often refers to her as 'lady' and 'little priestess' or just priestess. His cat is called Neferititi and chose him when he was a fledgling.

Darius is also part of the Sons of Erebus, the elite of Warriors. One of his gifts is a speed that defies time. Dragon Lankford states that he is skilled at knife-throwing; his collection of knives affirms this. He is also the only Son of Erebus that escapes into the tunnels after Kalona rises.

In Hunted, he and Aphrodite get together and he is very protective of both her and Zoey and even after Aphrodite Imprints with Stevie Rae. Later, in Tempted, Darius gives Aphrodite his Warrior's Oath binding the two of them together.

Kronos

Kronos is a young Son of Erebus who appears at the start of Awakened, trying (unsuccessfully) to woo Neferet. His mark is supposed to show his skill with mace weaponry and is described by Neferet as "4th of July fireworks".

Immortals

Nyx

Goddess of all Vampyres both red and blue, she makes several appearances throughout the series each time she shows herself she conveys a warning to Zoey, Aphrodite, or Stevie Rae. She makes a big appearance in Awakened when Neferet attempts to pubicly humiliate Zoey, during this appearance she gifts Raphaim with a human body and accepts him as her son, she also proclaims that he along with the red fledglings can attend school at the House of Night. She is also known to whisper words of advice to Zoey in times of stress.

Kalona

Kalona is a fallen angel and ex-Warrior of Nyx; he first appears in Untamed and is described to have the appearance of an angel. He has beauty beyond compare; wings the color of ravens' wings; and long, thick black hair. He has smooth skin the color of the sun's rays and his eyes are the color of amber. Since Kalona is a creature from the heavens, he has an aversion to earth and prefers to not go under ground at any point in time. Kalona has an uncontrollable lust for women. After bedding one maiden in a Cherokee village, he became obsessed with them and soon took over the village. He ruled over the men with his divine power and defiled the women there. The Wise Woman of the village said that women are his water, his air, and his food - his very life. Kalona is the father of the Raven Mockers, the mutant children of the Cherokee women he raped. Kalona was finally entrapped when the Wise Women from all the tribes made a girl out of clay using their own skills so she could run as fast as the wind and have beauty beyond compare. They named her A-ya and she possessed the five elements like Zoey. She was so beautiful that Kalona could not resist her. A-ya led Kalona to a cave deep in the forest, while the Wise Women followed them and chanted magical words. When Kalona followed A-ya into the cave she accepted him willingly, but when he joined with her she turned back into the earth she once was, trapping Kalona deep underground. Her soul left the clay body, leaving Kalona alone in the dark pits of the world. The Wise Women called to Earth Mother to seal the cave. Hundreds of year later, Kalona is resurrected by Stevie Rae's blood when it soaks into the ground nest to a sacred oak tree, as stated in a prophecy by Aphrodite. The oak tree breaks open, and Kalona comes flying out. He takes his place as "Erebus" and becomes Neferet's Consort. In "Hunted" he comes to Zoey in a dream and tries to tempt her into joining him against Nyx. Kalona believes Zoey is the fair maiden A-ya, who was created to love him, but Zoey resists. He fails at the end of the book when Zoey banishes him, along with Neferet, and Zoey is no longer affected by his luring spell. Even so, he invades her dreams and tries to woo her on various occasions afterwards. During this time, he still pretends to be Erebus, the consort of Nyx, while Neferet poses as the Nyx Incarnate. Kalona kills Heath at the end of Tempted for overhearing a conversation with him and Neferet. He also tells Zoey he can be good if he was with her fully. In Burned, Neferet binds his body under an oath to make sure Zoey doesn't come back from the Otherworld, another task in which he fails to accomplish. In "Awakened", Kalona finds that he was never actually bound to Neferet, who he has come to hate. He then tells Rephaim to choose between him and Stevie Rae, and in then end, Rephaim chooses Stevie Rae. Throughout Destined, Kalona expresses regret at not forgiving Rephaim, and is angered when he sees that his son's daylight form as a raven. At the same time, he maintains an uneasy truce with Zoey's group while his hatred of Neferet remains the same. At the end of the book, Kalona pleads forgiveness to save Rephaim's life when the latter is almost killed by Aurox. He swears a Warrior's Oath to Thanatos and takes over Dragon Lankford's role as Sword Master at the House of Night.

Neferet

The main antagonist in the series. The initial High Priestess of the House of Night, and Zoey Redbird's mentor. She has healing powers, and affinity for cats and the hability to read emotions and toughts. Her position at Tulsa’s House of Night is roughly equal to that of a head principal, although her position carries considerably more power. As well as serving as the High Priestess at the House of Night, she also teaches Vampyre Sociology to students and is Loren Blake's lover. Neferet has an affinity for healing and felines. She makes an astounding effect on people, being "amazing and awe-inspiring", because her aura of power, her charisma and her beauty. That makes the threat to destroy Zoey and the others a bigger problem for them because the people or things Neferet tries to use can't resist her beauty. Her mother died when Neferet was ten years old and possibly as a result her father abused her until she was Marked when she was fifteen. Neferet's vampyre marks are lines that remind Zoey of ocean waves, framed from her brows, extending down around her cheekbones. Physically, Neferet is described as having a strong but perfect and curvy body, with straight teeth, huge mossy-colored, like emeralds, and almond-shaped eyes, a heart-shaped face, and dark, glossy auburn red hair that falls in heavy waves around her waist. Her beauty is unusual and incredible, even among the unusual beauty of vampyres.

At first, Neferet is seen as a sweet, protective, motherly figure to Zoey, but later on in the novels, a deep secret is discovered. Neferet gave an oath to Sylvia Redbird, Zoey's grandmother, that Zoey would be safe at the House of Night and that she would take it upon herself personally to ensure Zoey's safety. However, in Betrayed she turns out to be very evil, revealing that she's the one who brought back and leads the group of undead fledglings in which Stevie Rae, Elizabeth No Last Name, Elliot, and Venus are in. The vampyre goddess Nyx also informs Zoey that Neferet has chosen a path of evil rather than to continue to listen to and follow the Goddess. She´s the one who kills Patricia Nolan and Loren Blake, after he commands him to have sex with Zoey and the leave her. She used their deaths to declare a war against humans, using that war as an excuse for the destruction of the High Council of vampyres and rule as a queen.

Neferet has a deep hatred for humans and plans to declare war against them because of Loren's and Nolan´s death, but Shekinah (High Priestess of all Vampyres) puts a stop to the war before it can start. In Untamed, she resurrects Kalona, and reveals herself to be Tsi Sgili Queen, killing Shekinah in the process. At the end of Hunted, she is banished into the sky along with Kalona, after she nearly kill Zoey.

As a consequence in Tempted, declares herself Nyx Incarnate to the Vampyre High Council, while trying to get the High Council to believe that Kalona is Erebus and ordered Kalona to kill Heath Luck´s. In Burned, Neferet sends Kalona to the Otherworld to keep Zoey from coming back but does not work. In Awakened she returns as the High Priestess at Tulsa after punish Kalona for his failure and imprision her under her commands, and kills Jack to repay Darkness for sending Kalona to the Otherworld. She acts in the High Council as if the winged immortal controlled her before, and for that she turns to the wrong side. Then she ask for forgiveness to Zoey, but it´s a fake, and pretends to kill Rephaim and Stevie Rae using her powers. Kalona appears and declare himself an enemy of Neferet. Later Nyx talks to the House of Night and says to Neferet that she can´t take the forgiveness because she is not a merecedor, and she is no more a child of the Goddess, but later Neferet twisted her words and stay as a High Priestess in the school. After Zoey and Stevie Rae leave the House of Night she consorts with the White Bull, who gifts her with Aurox, a vessel for Darkness, which she creates by sacrificing Zoey's mother Linda. In Destined she almost kill Zoey using the darkness, and succeed in create chaos in the House of Night of Tulsa allowing the humans to job in the school, using a cowboy to brake the heart of Lenobia - who before was a friend, and with the finality to confuse the other proffesors. She later sends Aurox to kill Rephaim to stop the Thanatos' reveal ritual in Destined. Probably she murdered Shadowfax - Dragon´s cat, as a pay to the White Bull.

Neferet was originally a mortal, but Kalona talks from his prision and only Neferet hears him because her mind is full o death and hatred. She was good before, despite her hatred and ambitious, but she turned to te path of evil, and in "Burned" is shown she is now and immortal. She can only be destroyed by herself. She´s the Queen Tsi Sgili, a creature of Darkness who feed the chaos, the destruction and the deaths, and she has vast magic power, and she´s a powerful telepath. Is very manipulative, and PC Cast says that "Neferet is beautiful as she is dangerous and intelligent. If the beauty is a weapon, the Tsi Sgili is a murderer who can´t be controlled by anyone". He takes her name from the egyptian queen Nefertiti. Her plan is use the chaos to kill Nyx and rule as vampire Goddess. Her aura is like a dead fish eye color, and is the only color in her soul.

Neferet is a cold person, extremely intelligent and evil, and a perfect actress, noted by Zoey´s in various moments in the series. Her love is the power and the opulence, and she´s a master manipulator. In Hidden is presumed that her is going to be expelled from her title and from the vampyre society, because Thanato´s finally discover her true face. She tinks that the White Bull can be controlled, but she´s very wrong, and maybe that is the key from her destruction.

Erebus

Nyx's Consort, he is seldomly mentioned, and has yet to appear in the books. He is described as having golden wings.

Aurox

A vessel for Darkness created with Linda Heffer's death. Because of the sacrifice's weakness, Nyx is able to insert Heath's soul inside.

Raven Mockers

The Raven Mockers are the mutant children of Kalona and the women he raped. They have the eyes and limbs of men and they have the bodies of giant ravens. The Raven Mockers are weak against the wind and fire elements. Their first appearance is in "Untamed". At the beginning they are very weak, they were spirits. They grow stronger through the time their father his getting stronger and they become solid, real creatures of Kalona. They also accidentally attack Zoey and faces their father's, Kalona's, wrath. It is possible that they are a form of Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and human women, first mentioned in the Book of Genesis.

Rephaim

Kalona's first and favorite son. He is first introduced as the Raven Mocker standing over Zoey's bed when they first return to the House of Night in Hunted. He is stabbed by Darius, which Kalona is angry about, being as Rephaim is his favorite son. He also kills Anastasia Lankford during the escape to the tunnels. In Tempted he is discovered during a perimeter search by Stevie Rae, having been wounded in the fight at the end of Hunted when Darius shoots Raven Mockers down from the sky. He speaks to Stevie Rae, and the sound of his humanity rocks her to the core. She takes him to shelter in a garden shed, where she later returns to care for his wounds. She leaves to return before anyone notices her absence and Rephaim questions her motives. When Stevie Rae returns she leads him to the tunnel networking and directs him to the Depot. She closes the tunnel leading to the abbey and informs him that just because he was born from evil doesn't make him evil. He slowly recovers and often thinks of Stevie Rae. When the other red fledglings (who have not chosen good or evil yet) force his hand in their plan to kill Stevie Rae he chooses good and saves her. She becomes very close to death and he offers his blood to her in order to save her and to repay his debt. Upon doing this the Imprint she has with Aphrodite shatters and Stevie Rae and Rephaim become Imprinted. He is then directed to hide in the Gilcrease Museum.

It is obvious that he and Stevie Rae are love interests, especially in 'Burned.' Rephaim shows his love of Stevie Rae many times during Burned. Many times he states how she shows him a world he never knew and that Stevie Rae was a path to a world of love, and laughter, and happiness, though she can cause much turmoil in his heart. He saves Stevie Rae from the white bull and helps her get away from Dallas after the latter turns to Darkness. Rephaim then takes her back to Gilcrease Museum and has her stay the night under his protection. The next night, Rephaim finally begins to tell Stevie Rae how he feels about her, when he senses Kalona's return to the physical world. Their conversation then goes to how they can't be with each other since Zoey and Kalona returned and they were supposed to be enemies in good vs. evil. Stevie Rae keeps denying it and when Rephaim disagrees, saying that he is a monster, Stevie Rae walks away, but not before saying "I'll miss you."

In Awakened, Rephaim goes back to obeying his father, but at the same time keeps up contact with Stevie Rae. Near the end of the novel, Rephaim is caught at the House of Night and forced by his father to choose what he wanted; he chooses Stevie Rae and Light over Kalona and Darkness. Nyx sees this piece of humanity and gives Rephaim a new form: he is a human by night and a raven by day. He and Stevie Rae begin a relationship soon afterwards.

Nisroc

A Raven Mocker, Nisroc has always been second-best in his father's preferences, because of a "certain softness". Apart from Rephaim's his speech is better that the other's.

Animals

When opposition arises to her presence at the Tulsa House of Night, Stark says,"She's my version of a cat."[6] This is later acknowledged when Stark dies and Duchess is seen "grieving just like a cat will who loses her vampyre"- by howling.[7] After Stark's death, Jack takes over taking care of Duchess and becomes quite attached to her. In Tempted, Jack offers to give Duchess back to Stark, however, Stark offers to share her, so that she belongs to both Stark and Jack. She is not mentioned in Burned. However in Awakened, she is heard mourning over Jack's death by howling.
