Michael "Mike" Viqueira (born May 21, 1960) covers politics for NBC News and appears on The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, and MSNBC. He is also a regular contributor to NBC News' political blog, First Read. [1]

Early life and education

A native of Washington, DC, Viqueira is a graduate of Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Maryland. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland in politics and government.

Viqueira is of Spanish and Italian heritage.[2]

Professional career

Viqueira began his career at NHK Japan Television, where he was an intern, producer, and radio and television correspondent. In 1998, he joined NBC News as a congressional producer, eventually becoming a congressional reporter. In 2006, he served as chairman of the Radio and Television Correspondents' Association. He is currently assigned to the White House where he reports for The Today Show, Nightly News, MSNBC, and The Weather Channel.

Awards

In 2008, Viqueira won two Emmy awards for the coverage of the bailout and the 2008 election.[3] He also received the Joan Barone Award for Excellence in Journalism that same year, for his coverage of the bailout.[4]

Personal

Viqueira is married to the former Kim Preeshl of Chinook, Montana. They have three children and live in his hometown of Bethesda, Maryland.
