The Cavendish Mall is an indoor shopping mall in Cote-Saint-Luc, Quebec, Canada. It includes a food court, multiplex movie theater and a walk-in clinic, the CLSC Rene Cassin. Redeveloped in 2011, the mall was reduced to almost half its original size. There is also a highrise building in the mall's current southern half.

David Cronenberg's 1977 film Rabid features scenes shot in the mall.

Declining years

The mall experienced declining patronage over the past decade due to an aging population and limited access by car because of the city's failure to extend Cavendish Boulevard. Another serious blow was the closing of its two main anchors: Eaton's (since 1998; now demolished) and Canadian Tire (since the 2000s; now Dollarama).[1] Canadian Tire's successor location to the former Cavendish Mall location is the standalone location on Montreal's Ste. Anne De Bellevue Blvd. in the Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough, giving that borough two locations, although the borough's first location is located inside the Plaza Côte-des-Neiges mall. It is unknown if that location overlapped with the former Cavendish Mall location. Other notable closures included Caplan Duval (since 2009), The Source (since 2007), Gap (since 2006; now demolished), Consumers Distributing (since 1996-97), Music World (since the 2000s), Steinberg's (since 1992; now IGA), Miracle Mart (since 1986; now Cineplex Odeon and briefly under Fortune Cinemas from 2005-2010) and restaurants: Pumpernicks, Cattleman's and Katerina's. With the southern half of the mall vacant it had been considered a dead mall throughout the 2000's.

Consolidation and revitalization

In August 2007 the owners announced a partial demolition to reduce the mall and consolidate its tenants and in August 2010 the remaining tenants were relocated to the north end of the mall. Demolition of the south end began October 2010.

In December 2010 demolition of 40% of the mall was completed. The mall was reduced to 250,000 square feet (23,000 m2) of space (for let) with room for 45 stores and a indoor playground. Previously the mall was approximately 400,000 square feet (37,161.2 m2). Extensive reconstruction was done in the old Caplan Duval site, where the CLSC Rene Cassin is now located. The site is now ready for construction of the new development and will include townhouses, semi-detached homes and the sale of 39 lots for single-family homes.
