Ellicottville is a village in Cattaraugus County, New York, USA. The population was 472 at the 2000 census. The village is named after Joseph Ellicott, principal land agent of the Holland Land Company.

The Village of Ellicottville lies in the southwest part of the Town of Ellicottville and is north of the City of Salamanca.

Ellicottville's current mayor is Charles Coolidge.

History

The native name for this location was "De-as-hen-da-qua," or "place for holding court."

The Holland Land Company opened an office in 1818. The community was the original county seat of Cattaraugus County in 1808 and public buildings were subsequently constructed.

The Village of Ellicottville was incorporated in 1837. In 1868, the county seat was moved to the Village of Little Valley.

Ski slopes and tourism

The Holiday Valley Ski Resort is south of the village, and the Nannen Arboretum is north.

Ellicottville is also home to the HoliMont Ski Club, the largest private ski club in North America. HoliMont is also considered the best private ski club in the United States. Because of the proximity to these two popular skiing destinations, Ellicottville is Cattaraugus County's primary tourist destination.

A major "Fall Festival" is held each year.

Famous residents

Brian Dunkleman was born on September 25, 1971, in Ellicottville and best known for his involvement with the television show American Idol.

Jillian Vogtli lived in Ellicottville. She took lessons at Holiday Valley and joined the ski team. She went on to ski for the US Olympic team.

Geography

Ellicottville is located at coor dms|42|16|30|N|78|40|17|W|city (42.275246, -78.671642)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.2 km²), of which, 0.8 square miles (2.2 km²) of it is land and 1.18% is water.

Great Valley Creek flows through the village.

Ellicottville is at the convergence of County Roads 13 and 71, along with NY-242 and US Route 219.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 472 people, 242 households, and 129 families residing in the village. The population density was 565.2 people per square mile (217.0/km²). There were 565 housing units at an average density of 676.5/sq mi (259.7/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.58% White, 0.21% Asian, and 0.21% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.64% of the population.

There were 242 households out of which 12.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.4% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 46.3% were non-families. 36.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.95 and the average family size was 2.47.

In the village the population was spread out with 12.9% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 35.0% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 48 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.5 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $37,750, and the median income for a family was $43,750. Males had a median income of $36,750 versus $19,306 for females. The per capita income for the village was $22,348. About 10.1% of families and 12.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.6% of those under age 18 and 8.6% of those age 65 or over.
