Servite High School is an all-male, Roman Catholic college preparatory high school operated by the Order of Friar Servants of Mary (the Servites). Located on a 15 acre campus in Anaheim, California, USA, as of 2008 it had an enrollment of about 935 and about 8,400 alumni. Its mascot is the Friar and its colors are black and white, trimmed with gold. It is located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange.

Almost 100% of Servite graduates attend college with 94% of graduates accepted immediately to four year colleges.

The focus of Servite is to "Form Faith-Filled Leaders", young men who are well-prepared for leadership and success in college and life. Servite's innovative Formation Program continuously tracks the performance of each student in multiple dimensions (academic, leadership/teamwork, character/spiritual development) to ensure formation of the "whole person" in every dimension. The Servite Formation Program is a continuous four-year program that begins in the summer before freshman year with Freshman Formation Weekend and concludes with graduation.

In 2007, Servite implemented an ambitious student leadership program by dividing the student body into 8 student-led communities called "Priories" and 48 smaller student-led homeroom communities. Each week a block period is dedicated to student-led leadership activities. The Priories are based on the Seven Holy Founders, and St. Philip Benizi.

The school is also known for its rigorous academic curriculum, sports tradition, performing and visual fine arts programs (including a course in classical guitar), and school spirit emphasizing unity and brotherhood. The motto "Credo ut Intelligam" ("I believe so I may understand") illustrates the emphasis the school places on developing faith filled men of God. The academic curriculum has a wide variety of courses, including College Prep (CP), Honors Placement (HP), and Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

Servite has two sister schools, Rosary High School in Fullerton and Cornelia Connelly High School (of the Holy Child Jesus) in Anaheim, both all-girls Catholic institutions. It also has exchange programs with Collège Notre-Dame des Servites in Ayer's Cliff, Quebec, Canada and Servite College in Perth, Western Australia.

The Servites responded to an invitation by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles to open the school in 1957, teaching the first classes at nearby St. Philip Benizi Elementary School until the first building was completed. The main building was officially dedicated on February 12, 1959. Major expansions since then include a gym and aquatics facilities (in 1967), theater (1977), new classrooms (1984), and new science and library facility (1998).

Admissions

Admissions to Servite is based on leadership potential as demonstrated in academic transcripts, entrance examination, activities, arts and athletics. The admissions process includes a review of academic transcripts; entrance examination; interview of parents and (separately) the student; letters of recommendation from teachers; participation in activities, community service, arts and/or athletics; and letters of recommendation from alumni or parents. It is expected that only half of those applying for admissions for the Class of 2013 will be accepted for enrollment. Admissions letters for the regular admissions process are generally mailed in March.

Servite has an Early Admissions Process that enables young men to apply as early as October of their 8th grade year. Upon completion of the admissions process and receipt of the first set of grades for their 8th grade year, students may be admitted to Servite as early as November of their 8th grade year. Students who apply for but are not accepted as part of the Early Admissions Process are automatically deferred to participate in the Regular Admissions Process.

Curriculum

Students in honors take a science course (Biology) as well as a dual English/Literature course. Freshmen in honors typically take a 0 period course, beginning at 7:10 a.m. Frosh students are required to take Theology, History, English, Literature, Drivers Ed/PE (1 semester each), and Mathematics.

Sophomore year, all students continue with the required subjects of Mathematics, English, and Theology. Students may opt to take "double math," Algebra II/Trigonometry and Geometry. AP World History and AP European History may be taken as electives, but history is not a required sophomore course.

Students continue to fulfill academic credits in Junior Year. More electives are available, but students must take United States History as a graduation requirement. If they have not done so, students may choose a variety of fine arts courses, also as a Senior year offers the most flexibility for students. A range of electives, from Ancient Warfare to Painting may be chosen. Beginning in 2008, students will be required to take Economics. Any student who receives 2 or more F's on a semester report card will not be allowed to participate in graduation, which typically takes place in late May/early June.

Servite's graduation requirements are designed to prepare students for application to UC and CSU campuses. A full year course is equal to 10 credits; one semester earns 5 credits. To earn credits, students must complete courses with a grade of C- or better

*English: 50 (40 if on frosh honors track)
*Mathematics: 30 (40 recommended)
*Lab Science: 20 (Biology and one additional)
*Foreign Language: 30 (of same language)
*Fine Arts: 10
*History: 20 (Ancient and U.S required)
*Electives: 30 (from any area above)
*Physical Education: 10
*Health/Driver's Education: 5 (taken simultaneously)
*Computers: 5

Students must also complete 120 hours of community service to graduate.

Technology

Servite is a national leader in the integration of 1:1 tablet pc technology into the curriculum and classroom.

During the 2007-2008 school year, Servite began a multi-year introduction of tablet pc's for each Servite student. By 2009, all sophomores, juniors and seniors will have tablet pc's. The purposes of the program include: 1) enhance the learning of students through improved curriculum and assessment measures; 2) prepare students for use of technology in college and their professions; 3) enable students to use technology for collaborative education and team-based projects.

Tablet pc's are much like notebook computers with the additional feature that the screen can be laid upon the keyboard and a pen used. The tablet pc enhances the creativity of the student and improves the educational process by allowing the student to write essays, equations, etc. in a manner impossible with a regular notebook computer.

Extracurricular activities

All of the clubs on campus are run by students. Nearly every student is a member of at least one club. The clubs at Servite include:

*Spanish Club
*French Club
*Classics Club (Latin and Greek)
*TIE Club (Teens Interested in the Environment)
*Key Club (Kiwanis Educating Youth)
*JSA (Junior Statesmen of America)

The Tri-School Theatre (http://www.trischool.org) Program is based at Servite and operated in conjunction with Rosary and Cornelia Connely High Schools. The program has won multiple state championships in technical theater events and numerous MACY performance awards. The program produces three main stage productions every year and also offer theater conservatory classes from "Technical Theatre" and "Set Shop" to "Musical Theatre" and "Monologues".

The Servite visual arts program wins awards in juried art shows throughout southern California.

In 2007, Servite started dedicated choir and band programs. In 2008, Servite will begin a dedicated 3-year film and video arts program.

In 2006, Servite became a member of the new Trinity League, consisting of Mater Dei, St. John Bosco, Orange Lutheran (OLU), Santa Margarita, and Junipero Serra (J-Serra) high schools. Servite also started two new CIF teams in 2006: Wrestling and Lacrosse.

Priory system

Implemented school-wide in the 2007 - 2008 school year, the priory system attempts to form faith-filled leaders at Servite. Each week during a block period, the 8 priors plan an activity that increases leadership ability, improves character, or serves others. Students are placed in 48 homerooms, 6 per priory. During the 2007 - 2008 school year, vicars were in charge of these homerooms. There were 3 assistant priors that performed duties delegated to them by the prior. Beginning in the 2008-2009 school year assistant priors will assume responsibility over homerooms and the vicar position will be eliminated.
