Station

The Danforth Avenue Station on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) is located one block east of Garfield Avenue^[1] ,^[2] near the location of the former Central Railroad of New Jersey Greenville station.

Service

Direct southbound service travels through Bayonne where it terminates at 8th Street.

Direct northbound service travels to Hoboken Terminal, where connection to PATH to midtown Manhattan and to commuter trains are available. at Hoboken Terminal. The line travels via Liberty State Park, where transfer to the West Side Branch is available, and Downtown Jersey City. Connections to PATH to Newark and downtown Manhattan at and the Paulus Hook Ferry Terminal are avaialable at Exchange Place.

Transfer to continuing northbound service to Hoboken and North Hudson, (at the Weehawken waterfront, Bergenline and the Tonnelle Avenue terminus) requires transfer at stations between Liberty State Park and Pavonia-Newport.^[3]

History

The station opened on April 22, 2000. It is located along the former Central Railroad of New Jersey right of way which terminated at Communipaw Terminal. During excavations for its construction workers came across what appear to be the petrified remains of luggage. The items were later incorporated in the design of a public art exhibition entitled Immigrant Remnants.^[4][5]

Danforth Avenue is a street in Greenville Section of Jersey City, New Jersey^[1] designated Hudson County Route 602. It runs east-west 1.12 miles (1.80 km) between a station on the Bayonne line of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail on the east and New Jersey Route 440 at the Hackensack Riverfront in the west. Portions of Danforth Avenue, particularly at Old Bergen Road, constitute a commercial district for the area.^[7] Danforth Avenue is the southern terminus of West Side Avenue.^[1] near Country Village. From its eastern end near the station it looks over the Greenville Yard and Port Liberte, both located on the Upper New York Bay. Across its western end at NJ 440 are the New Jersey City University West Campus and Droyer's Point.

   Immigrant Remnants Found Remains Appear Petrified, Luggage Among Items Unearthed During excavations for the construction of stations along the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System, workers this morning came across what appear to be the petrified remains of luggage and other items buried under many feet of earth. Digging was immediately suspended at two sites after it was noticed that some of the exposed rock looked like old pieces of luggage. As a gathering crows looked on bewildered workers carefully pulled familiar shapes from the ground. By noon a trunk, a violin case, a hat box, a suitcase and some parcels had been counted among the unearthed items. Construction managers at the two affected stations, the Richard Street station and the Danforth Avenue station, declined to officially comment on the bizarre findings. however, witnesses to the events of this morning seem convinced that the delicately articulated rocks were not really rocks at all, but petrified luggage.
