Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland

The Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) [1] were inaugurated in May 2003, and are adjudicated by a panel of all the regular Scottish theatre critics.

The 2009 ceremony took place at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre [2] on June 14. Vanishing Point (Theatre Company) won three awards for Interiors, including Best Production.

The 2008 ceremony took place at Glasgow's Oran Mor [3] on June 15 during the West End Festival. Dundee Rep won four of the ten awards for Peer Gynt including Best Production.

In 2007 the National Theatre of Scotland (NTS) production of Black Watch, written by Gregory Burke, about the history of the famous Scottish regiment and its notorious deployment at Camp Dogwood in Iraq, won four of the ten awards, including Best Production.

The awards for 2006-2007 were presented at Pitlochry Festival Theatre [4] on June 10.

  • Best Show for Children and Young People: Liar presented by the TAG Theatre Company and Sounds of Progress;
  • Best Actor (Male): Matthew Zajac in The Tailor of Inverness presented by Dogstar Theatre;
  • Best Design: Alex Lowde (set) and Chris Davey (lighting) for Beauty and the Beast presented by Dundee Rep;
  • Best Use of Music and Sound: Seylan Baxter, Lillias Kinsman-Blake and Rachel Newton for The Lasses, O presented by Rowan Tree Theatre;
  • Best Technical Presentation: Slick presented by Vox Motus/Tron Theatre;

Awards for 2007-2008

  • Best Use of Music and Sound: Alasdair Macrae for Subway presented by Vanishing Point [8];
  • Best Ensemble: The Wall [9] presented by Borderline Theatre [10];

Awards for 2006-2007

  • Best New Play: The Unconquered by Torben Betts, presented by Stellar Quines Theatre Company [11];
  • Best Actor (Male): Sandy Grierson for the title role in Fergus Lamont, presented by Communicado with Perth Repertory Theatre [13];
  • Best Actor (Female): Meg Fraser for Martha in Tom Fool at the Glasgow Citizens Theatre [14];
  • Best Director: John Tiffany for Black Watch presented by NTS;
  • Best Ensemble: the cast of Black Watch for the NTS;
  • Best Technical Presentation: Black Watch for the NTS;
  • Best Production: Black Watch [17].
