History

State Highway 9 was authorized in 1933. At this time, it ran from U.S. Highway 12 in Benson northwest to U.S. 75 at Doran. In the 1950s, when U.S. 75 between Ada and Crookston was rerouted to another roadway, the Highway 9 designation was extended along former State Highway 82 from Breckenridge to Ada and along the former route of U.S. 75 to its current northern terminus.[3]

In 1963, Highway 9 was extended again, replacing State Highway 17 from Benson to New London. This section had been part of State Highway 23 until around 1940.[3]

Highway 9 is the original alignment of U.S. Highway 75 between State Highway 27 and U.S. Highway 12; and U.S. Highway 75 between State Highway 200 and U.S. Highway 2.[3]

The last section of Highway 9 to be paved was the old State Highway 82 section north of Breckenridge, which was paved by 1961.[3]
