Cape Byron

Cape Byron

The headland Cape Byron is the eastern-most point (coord|28|37|58|S|153|38|20|E|region:AU-NSW_type:cape) of the continent of Australia. It has a lighthouse on it, as well as a walking trail and several look-outs, and is an excellent location to watch the migration of Humpback Whales. It is located in the town of Byron Bay.

It was named by British explorer Captain James Cook when he passed it on 15 May 1770, to honour John Byron who circumnavigated the globe in the HMS "Dolphin" in 1764-66. [Ray Parkin, "H. M. Bark Endeavour", Miegunyah Press, second edition 2003, ISBN 0-522-85093-6, page 221.]
