Albertas Šimėnas

Albertas Šimėnas (born February 15 1950 in Papiliai) was Prime Minister of Lithuania for 3 days, from January 10 to January 13, 1991. He disappeared during the January Events and was replaced by Gediminas Vagnorius.

Šimėnas graduated from Vilnius University in 1972 with a degree in economics. He lectured at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University from 1984 to 1989.lt icon cite web |url=http://www3.lrs.lt/seimu_istorija/w3_lrs.seimo_narys-p_asm_id=159&p_int_tv_id=784&p_kalb_id=1&p_kade_id=3.htm |title=Albertas ŠIMĖNAS |publisher=Seimas |year=2001 |accessdate=2008-09-03] He joined activities of Sąjūdis movement and was elected to the Supreme Council – Reconstituent Seimas. On March 11, 1990 he signed the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania, declaring Lithuania's independence from the Soviet Union. In January 1991, when the first government led by Kazimira Prunskienė resigned due to rising prices, Šimėnas became the Prime Minister. In an emergency session, Gediminas Vagnorius took over his cabinet and became the Prime Minister. Šimėnas suddenly reappeared on January 14. Later, he was elected to the Seimas (1996–2000). He ran unsuccessfully in the 2004 Seimas and European Parliament elections, after which he joined the private sector.

Šimėnas published several academic papers on economy and a monograph about economic reforms in Lithuania from 1990 to 1994.
