The Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial is a Group 2 flat horse race in Ireland open to three-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run at Leopardstown over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs (2,012 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in May.

Contents

History

The event was established in 1971, and it was originally called the Nijinsky Stakes. It was named in honour of Nijinsky, an Irish-trained winner of the English Triple Crown in 1970. For a period the Nijinsky Stakes held Group 2 status.

The race was renamed the Derby Trial Stakes in 1984, and from this point it was sponsored by Derrinstown Stud. It was downgraded to Group 3 level in the early 1990s, and it regained Group 2 status in 2003.

The Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial serves as a trial for the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby. The last winner to achieve victory in the Epsom version was High Chaparral in 2002, and the most recent to win the Irish Derby was Fame and Glory in 2009.
