Phil Jones (journalist)

Phil Jones is an English sports journalist and television reporter.

After obtaining diplomas with distinction in journalism, law, and public administration from Richmond Journalist College in Sheffield (which has since merged with the University of Sheffield), Jones' began his career in print and radio journalism. He covered news and sports for the Manchester-based David Burke Press Agency, as well as writing regular columns for the "Manchester Evening News". At Piccadilly Radio, Jones covered stories concerning cricket, football, and rugby.

In the early 1990s, Jones became a reporter for the BBC in London, and was part of the team that won "Best TV Coverage in the World" for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. He was the BBC's main reporter for the 1994 Wimbledon Championships, and provided the nightly round-up on "Wimbledon Today" highlights programme. He also contributed to "Grandstand", "Match of the Day", "Sportsnight", and "Sport on Friday", working closely with Des Lynam, Steve Rider, and Sue Barker. Jones joined CNN International's "World Sport" team in October 1994, alongside Terry Baddoo and Mark McKay. At the time, the show aired nightly at 10.30pm GMT.

Early in the new millennium, Jones returned to the BBC, and is now a regular reporter on major sporting events.
