History

In 1994, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), the largest telecommunications company in Malaysia established the Institute of Telecommunication and Information Technology (ITTM) in Taiping, Perak. The first campus was Telekom Malaysia Berhad's former northern region office where the first batch of 42 students were selected to undergo an experimental 2-year telecommunication engineering diploma program. With the excellent academic success of the 1st and 2nd batch, ITTM was rewarded the first private university status in Malaysia. With the university status in 1996, ITTM renamed itself to Universiti Telekom. Two campuses were established, one in its original location in Taiping, Perak and the other in Melaka.

The Melaka campus was set up in 1997 and is located in the Ayer Keroh district, the initial setting up of the campus involved converting an old building belonging to the Telekom Malaysia Berhad's southern region office.

Its Cyberjaya campus opened in Malaysia's first intelligent city, Cyberjaya, on 8 July 1999. This campus was the brainchild of the country's fourth Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and was as a centre of learning and research for the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC), a 750 km² area designated as the country's high-tech research and industrial area. The relationship between the campus and the MSC is intended to be similar to the relationships U.C. Berkeley and Stanford University share with the Silicon Valley. Later, he requested the management to change the name of Universiti Telekom to Multimedia University.

Within the first five years of its founding, the university's total student population grew beyond 10,000 in both campuses.

The university is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia.

Recognition & achievement

In 2002, The Multimedia Learning System (MMLS) of MMU won the Asia Pacific MSC IT& Telecommunication Award (APMITTA) and the 2001 Asia Pacific Award for Best of Smart Learning Applications.[4] During 2004, MMU secured four awards from the Ministry of Education, namely, the Highest Enrolment of Local Students, Excellence in R&D, the Highest Number of Courses Accredited, Special Award in Recognition of MMU's Overall Achievement.[5]

In film and video, the Westport Television Commercial Project by MMU students bagged the Silver Screen Awards at the International Film and Video Awards held in the US. Also locally, film and animation students from MMU also won several awards such as the Astro Next-gen Contenpreneur Awards in 2008 and 2009, especially in the field of visual effects.[6]

As for engineering education, the AFEO Board unanimously agreed to confer upon MMU the AFEO Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award 2007 for its outstanding achievements.[7]

In 2009, MMU was ranked at 171 by THES-QS in the Asian University Rankings.[8] It is the first private university in Malaysia to achieve such feat, making it the highest ranked of its kind in the list to date.

MMU was rated tier 5 (Excellent) in the Malaysia Quality Agency SETARA Rating 2010. This is the highest rating achieved by all Malaysia private and public institutions. Others who achieved tier 5 include Monash University (Sunway campus), Nottingham University (Malaysia campus), and University Malaya.

Based on the SCIMAGO Institutions ranking 2010, MMU was ranked 368 in Asia, and No. 6 in Malaysia (No. 1 Private University).

The Webometric ranking 2010 similar ranked MMU as the No. 1 private University in Malaysia, and is ranked at 172 in Asia.

In 2011 however, ranking for MMU dropped and was ranked 201+ among Asian Universities by QS World University Ranking[9]

Presidents

  1. Prof. Datuk Dr. Ghauth Jasmon (1996–2007)
  2. Prof. Dr. Zaharin Yusoff (2008–2010)
  3. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Muhamad Rasat Muhamad (2011–Present)

E-Scroll

Multimedia University(also called MMU) is the first university in the world to introduce E-Scroll to its graduates. In the university's first convocation, all graduates received an E-Scroll from the Chancellor. The E-Scroll is digitally signed and stored in a CR-ROM as well as recorded on the Smart-Card (microchip-based card).

As more and more job applications go on-line, these graduates can attach their E-Scroll on the on-line applications before submitting it over the Internet. This eliminates the need for paper-based scrolls. A more important point to highlight is that paper-based scrolls are difficult to be verified. To verify paper-based scroll one requires a copy of the original signature of the signatories. The contents of paper-based scroll requires a copy of the original signature of the signatories. The contents of paper-based scroll are also not protected and are subjected to modifications. However, digitally signed documents use public key cryptography technology that will provide full protection of the documents. Only the originator (or signatory) of the document can do the modification or editing.

In addition to the above system, the university also provides a Registry of Graduates homepage that will allow anyone to verify the validity of the E-Scroll. With these systems in place, the university not only eliminates fraud, but also complements the e-governance system, preparing itself for a truly web-based society. This system is very effective in the digital world as that is where the world is moving.

Melaka Campus

The campus is nestled in Bukit Beruang (lit: Bear Hill) and has greatly affected the local community[citation needed]. With increase in students, the community has seen growing numbers of residential area and commercial outlets.

The Faculty of Business and Law is located at this campus, with over 3800 students enrolled in its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes which include the Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) in Banking & Finance, International Business, Marketing Management, Human Resource Management and Entrepreneurship; Bachelor of Business and Knowledge Management (Hons); Bachelor of Accounting (Hons); Bachelor of International Economics (Hons); Bachelor of Law (Hons) (LLB); Master of Philosophy (Management) and Doctor of Philosophy (Management).

Among the research strengths of the Faculty of Business and Law are in knowledge management, electronic services, finance and banking, marketing and entrepreneurship and cyberlaw.

Students

As of February 2009 the university had 19,869 students enrolled in 110 courses, including undergraduate and graduate students. Approximately 19% of these are international students from 80 countries. The university set itself a deadline for 2010 to increase the population of international students to 30% of the total.

University students consistently score top placements in national business plan competitions. Students enjoy a rich variety of social activities with over 100 campus student groups.

Student organizations

All student bodies are registered with the Student Affairs Division (STAD). Each student body is allocated a budget to enable them to run their activities efficiently. However, students are greatly encouraged to seek alternative means of funding their activities or functions. The student bodies are grouped as follows.

Student service bodies

  • Students' Representative Council (SRC)
  • Student Publication Board (SPB)
  • International Students' Society [ISS]

Clubs and societies

  • Cultural-based or language-based societies
  • Faculty-based societies
  • Interest-based societies
  • Sports/martial art-based societies

The university has professional engineering/IT student bodies which are:

In 2002, the dean of the Faculty of Engineering (Engr. Professor Dato' Dr. Chuah Hean Teik) under the patronage of the Chancellor YABhg (Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Hj. Mohammad Ali) founded the Multimedia University Engineering Society Overseas Research Programme (MESCORP). MESCORP is an undergraduate-based research work which involves a field study initiated by the university's engineering students.

Among the more notable international events that have been organized by the students in MMU include the World Universities Debating Championship in 2005, the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships in 2003, and the All-Asian Intervarsity Debating Championships in 2000.
