Surobi District

Surobi District

Sorubi District (or Sorūbay, not Surobi) is situated in the north-eastern part of the Kabul Province of Afghanistan, approximately 70 km north of Kabul City. It is one of the largest districts. It has a population of 140,000 people or 28,000 families, with another 10,000 families expected to return from Pakistan in the near future (2002 official UNHCR est). About 90% of the population are Pashtuns and rest are ethnic Pashais. [ [http://www.aims.org.af/afg/dist_profiles/unhcr_district_profiles/centra/kabul/sarobe.pdf UNHCR profile for Surobi District] ]

Surobi district borders with Bagrami and Deh Sabz districts to the west, Parvan and Kapisa provinces to the north, Laghman Province to the east, and Nangarhar Province and Khaki Jabbar District to the south. Its headquarter is the town of Surobi, which is situated in the central part of the district.

There are 130 villages in Surobi district. The Kabul River travels through the centre of the district that keeps the two sides of the district quite green. Three dams (Band-e-Naghlo, Band-e-Mahipar and Band-e-Barqi-Sarobi) are in the district, which generate electricity for Kabul and the district itself. However, due to lack of water, Band-e-Mahipar is out of order for now.
