Double Bay is a harbourside eastern suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Double Bay is located 4 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative centre of the local government area of the Municipality of Woollahra.

History

Double Bay developed early after initial European Settlement in 1788. In the early years of the colony, Double Bay was used as shelter for fishermen who would regularly fish around the harbour. Farming mostly cattle and lettuce the farm developed and by 1814 the farm had increased to envelop the valleys leading into the area currently known as Woollahra, Bondi Junction, Bellevue Hill, and Point Piper.[2]

Commercial area

The commercial area runs along New South Head Road and extends along surrounding streets of Knox Street, Cross Street and Bay Street. It features boutique hotels and shopping, restaurants and cafes. Double Bay is known as the most fashionable and expensive shopping district in Sydney.

Transport

Double Bay features a ferry wharf for Eastern Suburbs ferry services.

Sport and recreation

Since 1908, Double Bay has been represented in one of Australia's most popular sporting competitions, the National Rugby League, by the Sydney Roosters, also known as the Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club.

In fact, the most famous Rugby League player of all time, Dally Messenger, was born, raised, and lived most of his life in Double Bay. He attended Double Bay primary school, being from a famous local family of fishermen in the area, and became a local celebrity with the rise of the sport in Sydney's eastern in the first half of the 20th century.

The highest award any Rugby League player can attain in Australia, is the Dally M award, named in Dally Messenger's honour. Dally is arguably Double Bay's most famous role model, in the suburb's existence.
