nihongo|Kitanagoya|北名古屋市|Kitanagoya-shi, or "North Nagoya" transliterally, is a city located in Aichi, Japan. The city was created as a result of merger of two neighboring towns, Shikatsu and Nishiharu in March 20, 2006.

As of March 12008, the city has an estimated population of 80,578 and a population density of 4385.39 persons per km2. The total area is 18.37km2.

History

Two old towns (the town of Shikatsu and Nishiharu) was part of the Kasugai County during the beginning of the Meiji period and were divided into 20 smaller villages. But in the end of the 39 th year of the Meiji period, the villages of Shikatsu and Nishiharu were born.

The first step in expansion began in the first year of the Taishō period with the development of the Meitetsu Inuyama train line. Later in the 30 th year of the Showa period, there was a population boost accommodating the cities' expansion. In the 36 th year of the Showa period, the town of Shikatsu, in the 38th year (of the Showa period), the town of Nishiharu were born due to enforced industrialization. Transportation

The Meitetsu Inuyama train line runs from the north and south ends of the city and connects with the Nagoya and Inuyama junction. In addition, Meitetsu Inuyama train line shares the railway with Tsurumai Subway line (owned by the city of Nagoya ) allowing easy access to the downtown area of Nagoya .

The National Highway 22 runs along the western side of the city, and close by is the National Highways 41 and 302, Meishin Toll Road, Nagoya Toll Road 11 Komaki line, Higashi meihan Automobile Road as well. The Nagoya Toll Road 16, the Ichinomiya line, has been recently established, allowing faster access to the Nagoya Airport and creating a more traffic friendly environment. Location and Environment

The city is located in the northwest region of Aichi Prefecture . Kitanagoya city is bordered by the City of Nagoya to the south, Town of Toyoyama to the east, Town of Haruhi to the west, and City of Komaki , Iwakura, and Ichinomiya to the north. The city lies within a 10 kilometers range of downtown Nagoya and is relatively small. The city is about 6 kilometers from East to West, and about 4 kilometers from North to South; an area of 18.37km2.The city is located in the heart of Noubi Plain, about five meters (give or take) from sea level. There are many rivers such as the Gojo River , Shin River , and Aise River , creating a very natural biosphere.Due to the warm weather throughout the year, agriculture is highly developed, using the productive fertile soil and land with an alluvial fan created by Kiso and Shounai River .
