Bear Creek Township is a civil township of Emmet County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township population was 5,269.

Communities

*Petoskey is at the northeast corner of the township, but is administratively autonomous.
*Bay View is a small resort community just east of Petoskey providing educational programs in conjunction with the United Methodist Church.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 45.8 square miles (118.5 km²), of which, 39.6 square miles (102.6 km²) of it is land and 6.2 square miles (16.0 km²) of it (13.48%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 5,269 people, 2,001 households, and 1,416 families residing in the township. The population density was 133.0 per square mile (51.4/km²). There were 2,969 housing units at an average density of 75.0/sq mi (28.9/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.32% White, 0.09% African American, 1.73% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population.

There were 2,001 households out of which 36.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.9% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 23.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the township the population was spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.9 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $44,129, and the median income for a family was $52,262. Males had a median income of $36,483 versus $27,206 for females. The per capita income for the township was $22,534. About 3.1% of families and 5.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 8.1% of those age 65 or over.
