Swanbourne is a western coastal suburb of Perth, Western Australia and is an affluent locale with older homes being renovated and many new homes being built. The suburb is named after Swanbourne in Buckinghamshire, England.

Geography

Swanbourne is bounded by the rifle range and golf club to the north, Lake Claremont and Stirling Road to the east, the Fremantle railway line and North Street to the south, and the Indian Ocean to the west.

At the ABS 2001 census, Swanbourne had a population of 3,328 people living in 1,259 dwellings, nearly all of which were detached houses on separate lots. The ABS identified property and business services, health, and education as the three main occupations.

Facilities

Swanbourne includes the 18-hole Cottesloe Golf Club and Swanbourne Beach. Swanbourne is also well-known for having the only nudist beach in Perth. The beach, situated on army land and thus not subject to local council authority, is immediately north of the officially named Swanbourne Beach. Swanbourne Reserve contains a number of sporting facilities, including tennis courts, a football/cricket pitch and a rugby pitch. Also at Swanbourne Reserve is the relocated Tom Collins House. Tom Collins was a famous Australian author. An independent school, Scotch College, is located within the suburb. It also includes a state primary school.

The Australian SASR barracks at Campbell Barracks are both located within the suburb, which also occupies coastline north of Cottesloe and south of City Beach.

Transport

Swanbourne is served by the Swanbourne train station. Various buses travel through Swanbourne and Mount Claremont. All services are operated by the Public Transport Authority.

Politics

Swanbourne is part of the federal division of Curtin. The federal seat is held by the conservative Liberal Party. It is regarded as a safe seat as it has been continually retained by the Liberal Party with the exception of former Liberal member Allan Rocher as an Independent politician between 1996 and 1998. For the parliament of Western Australia, the state electoral district of Cottesloe is also held by the Liberal Party.

Weather station

It is also the location of one of Perth's automatic weather stations [ [http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDW60900.shtml Latest Capital City Observations Western Australia ] ]
