Falling Rain Genomics

FallingRain is a global mapping system analogous to GoogleMap, etc. It focuses on displaying terrain, airports, and railway lines. The maps are accessed by the names of towns, rather than by Latitudes and Longitudes. [cite book |title=Geographic Information |last=Johnson |first=Jenny Marie |year=2003 |publisher=Greenwood Publishing Group |isbn=1573563927 |pages=p. 50 |url=http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=e5KKcC6DAgUC&pg=PA50&dq=%22Falling+Rain+Genomics%22&num=100&client=firefox-a&sig=ACfU3U2nIt6O0BNf0wu1hCppY7LViny8NQ |accessdate=2008-08-30] The map for each town is displayed with two thumbnail sketches, one medium one for the country view and the other large one for the global overview.

Railway lines

Railway lines are shown by lines of red dots.

Closed railways

Both MSN and FallingRain maps still show some closed railway lines such as the Sierra Leone Government Railway closed in 1974 and the branch lines to Ajana and Yuna in Western Australia.

New Railways

A new railway from Caracas to Cúa opened in 2006, but is not yet shown by FallingRain.

Namesakes

In some cases there are several towns in a single country with the same name, such as Bingo, Burkina Faso. A search through the gazeteer will list them all. A google search seems to find only one.

Elevation

FallingRain gives a spot elevation of the town which it is pointing at.
