This T-shaped area of 1,670 acres (6.7 km²) contains 272 buildings in a variety of architectural styles dating from over 200 years of the settlement's history. Several of the contributing properties in the district are listed themselves in the National Register. Among them are the village's post office, which was designed at the behest of then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt to mimic the first Dutch house built in Rhinebeck; the Tudorbethan Astor Home for Children and the Henry Delamater House.Today the buildings have become a popular local attraction, many of them housing boutiques and other small businesses that attract many visitors to the village on weekends. The streets are lined with large shade trees, bluestone sidewalks and other historic features.
