Tipton is a city in Moniteau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,261 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Tipton is located at coor dms|38|39|17|N|92|46|44|W|city (38.654594, -92.778800)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²), of which, 2.1 square miles (5.4 km²) of it is land and 0.48% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 3,261 people, 872 households, and 558 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,554.6 people per square mile (599.6/km²). There were 967 housing units at an average density of 461.0/sq mi (177.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 81.51% White, 15.18% African American, 0.95% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 1.63% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.89% of the population.

There were 872 households out of which 31.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.5% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% were non-families. 32.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the city the population was spread out with 16.8% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 43.5% from 25 to 44, 17.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 188.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 215.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $32,155, and the median income for a family was $40,486. Males had a median income of $24,509 versus $20,824 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,987. About 8.7% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.5% of those under age 18 and 10.5% of those age 65 or over.

Actor David Koechner was born and raised in Tipton. Tipton is also the birthplace of Gene Clark, singer-songwriter for The Byrds.

Tipton has a colorful water tower painted like an "eight ball". This water tower originated in 1968 when Ewald Fischer built his billiard table factory--Fischer Manufacturing Co.
