The division was one of the original 75 divisions contested at the first federal election. It is named for the Maranoa River, which runs through the division. Located in southwest Queensland, towns located in Maranoa include Charleville, Cunnamulla, Dalby, Roma, Stanthorpe, Winton and Warwick.
