Ultimate Thor is a fictional character, a superhero in the Ultimate Marvel Universe based on the mythological Thor and the Marvel Universe Thor.

Unlike the 616 Universe Thor, his godhood was deliberately kept in doubt, with contradictory clues that he was both who he claimed and that he was simply a powerful lunatic spread throughout his appearances. In "Ultimates" vol.2 #13 he is confirmed to be a god.

Character biography

Beginnings

Ultimate Thor is referred to as once being a psychiatric nurse called Thorlief Golmen, until he suffered a nervous breakdown before his 30th birthday. He spent 18 months institutionalized, during which time he claims to have realized who he is and why he has been sent to Earth. He claimed to be Thor, Norse god of thunder, on a mission to save the planet. His political and social activism, as well as his own self-help books, attracted rebellious teenagers and conspiracy theorists. He has spoken against America's military aggression against other world powers and the military-industrial complex. However, the truth behind these statements is questionable, as they came from characters aligned with or later revealed to be Loki, a reality-changing Norse god.

Ultimates

When General Nick Fury contacted him about joining the Ultimates, Thor refused to work for the military-industrial complex that he detests. When the Hulk appeared in Manhattan, Thor refused to assist unless the President doubled the foreign aid budget. Not long after the Ultimates confronted the Hulk, the President relented and Thor appeared in time to save Captain America from Banner, although he was subsequently defeated. Following the battle, Thor became good friends with Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, pledging his support whenever lives are in danger. Soon thereafter, Thor was briefed on the Chitauri and sent to investigate a suspected Chitauri base in Micronesia. Finding the base abandoned and about to explode, they were saved by Iron Man's force field. Once a Chitauri fleet appeared in Arizona, Thor brought the survivors there, and alongside Iron Man provided air support against the Chitauri spacecraft until the Air Force arrived. Iron Man asked Thor to help him dispose of the Chitauri bomb that would obliterate the entire solar system, so Thor teleported it to the wastes of Nastrond, where its detonation caused only a small ripple in our space-time.

Ultimate War

Thor appears as a member of the Ultimates, retrieving the dead with Iron Man after the attack in issue one. When Magneto attacks the Ultimates, he says he is surprised to see Thor with the Ultimates, and asks him if he thinks he can change them. Thor throws Mjolnir at the Master of Magnetism, but Magneto manages to stop it an inch from his helmet and throws it back at Thor, sending him through a wall. Thor joins the Ultimates in attacking the X-Men later on, he fought Storm but was unable to defeat Colossus.

Ultimate Six

Thor appears with the Ultimates while bringing in Kraven the Hunter, although he refuses Captain America's requests to catch Kraven or bring him back. He is seen aiding in reconstruction efforts in Bosnia when summoned following the Six's breakout. Thor is the one who defeats Electro during the climactic battle at the White House.

Ultimate Secret

Thor and Iron Man escort the Fantastic Four to Nevada. When the Kree attack the base, Thor, Black Widow, Johnny Storm, and The Thing fight off the aliens. As he is idolised by Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm, he fraternises with them to the point of ordering Carol Danvers to prepare a Keg of Beer for after the battle.

Ultimate Fantastic Four

In Ultimate Fantastic Four #25, Reed Richards reveals he has created infant hard light versions of Captain America, Iron Man, and even Thor. It is also revealed that Thor was believed to be the most powerful superhuman on the planet, until Namor demonstrates his own strength. Also in the Frightful storyline it is revealed that Dr Doom may be more powerful than Thor but this is possibly due to Dr Doom's mastery of Atlantean Magic as his natural powers revealed so far don't seem to be in the same league as Thor's.Thor appeared in issue #27 at a party Johnny Storm hosted. When the Ultimate Fantastic Four went to the past and altered the event that gave them their powers in issues #27-29, an alternate Ultimate time-line (dubbed Super-Earth) was created, where Thor became President of the United States, and created a "power sharing" plan, using Skrull/Chitauri techonologies to give everyone on earth superpowers. When the Skrull attack the world, Ultimate Super Skrull states that Thor has "natural powers" unrelated to the power sharing plan. He was later attacked and killed by Skrull invaders, although the timeline was altered.

Ultimates 2

Thor is discovered talking to an Asgardian only he can see, and resigns from the Ultimates, protesting its likely involvement in foreign affairs, and the team's assumption that it was he who outed Banner as the Hulk. When an Italian demonstration against the European Defence Initiative's super-soldier program turned violent, Thor intervened. The Ultimates learned from the EDI's head scientist, Gunnar Golmen, Thorlief's brother, that the Norwegian government had chosen the Norse God of Thunder, Thor, as their national image and modeled a super soldier after him. They created a power-belt in the image of Thor's that granted the wearer unbelievable strength, durability and the power of flight. Their biggest success was the electric power battery in the form of Thor's hammer Mjolnir, which can ionize the environment, control the weather and allow the user to teleport. Gunnar alleged that Thor had stolen the technology that gives him his powers, and they tracked him to Norway to take him into custody. Thor told them that Gunnar was actually Loki, but the Ultimates & EUI soldiers attacked him anyway. He shrugged off all their attacks, although his hair was burned off. It wasn't until Quicksilver managed to jump 50 feet into the air at Thor, and grab his belt, that brought Thor to the ground. He was placed in Bruce Banner's cell in the Triskelion, where a vision of Gunnar/Loki taunted him about the existence of a traitor within the Ultimates' ranks. He remains there until the invasion of America, at which time a bright light shines on him, and Thor vanishes from his cell. Most recently, Thor appears standing beneath Loki, his hair restored, and wielding his belt and Mjolnir once more, challenging Loki to battle. During this battle he summons an army of Asgardian warriors, which battle Loki's monster army and, together with the Ultimates he defeats Loki, who is either killed or sent to Odin for punishment.

Ultimate Power

Thor appears alongside the rest of the new Ultimates alongside Nick Fury arriving to battle the Squadron Supreme when they destroy the roof of the Baxter Building. After the battle Thor used his hammer to teleport the helicarrier with the team to the Supremeverse. There he engages Hyperion in combat, but is defeated by the former's superior speed. However in Ultimate Power #7 Thor gains the upper hand against Hyperion felling him with a huge bolt of lightning then severely beating him with Mjolnir. He also knocks out Zarda as she attempts to stop him beating Hyperion.

Ultimates 3

In the upcoming arc, Thor's Mjolnir, no longer looks as it has before: A metal hybrid of a hammer and axe. It now has the same classic, stone look and brick-like shape as the mainstream version, although this is later revealed to be a different hammer all together and Thor still possess his old hammer. He is also romantically involved with Valkyrie, has developed a bulkier body, and has a massive beard. Whether there is a canonical reason for this change or it is artistic choice on the part of writer Jeph Loeb and/or artist Joe Madureira remains to be seen. Thor now speaks in Shakespearean English, as 616 Thor does, because he no longer cares if people think he is crazy.

A doctor, apparently modeled after Donald Blake in terms of appearance and his trademark walking stick, examines the wounded Scarlet Witch and confirms that she is dead.

The events of Ultimates 3 is revealed to take place a year or so after the current Ultimate titles.
