Liberty is a town in Pickens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,009 at the 2000 census. The community was originally called "Salubrity Springs."

Geography

Liberty is located at coor dms|34|47|18|N|82|41|42|W|city (34.788390, -82.694865)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.3 square miles (11.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 3,009 people, 1,267 households, and 881 families residing in the town. The population density was 705.0 people per square mile (272.1/km²). There were 1,404 housing units at an average density of 329.0/sq mi (127.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 86.94% White, 11.53% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.63% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.00% of the population.

There were 1,267 households out of which 26.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.9% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 27.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the town the population was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $31,055, and the median income for a family was $37,656. Males had a median income of $30,753 versus $21,051 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,327. About 11.1% of families and 13.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.0% of those under age 18 and 15.4% of those age 65 or over.

Film

The film Midnight Man starring Cameron Mitchell was filmed in the Liberty, Six Mile, and Clemson areas in the 1970s.

A majority of the 1999 major motion picture "Chill Factor", starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Skeet Ulrich, was filmed on location in Liberty and in its surrounding areas.

Athletics

The first touchdown made at the Liberty Stadium was made by Horace King in the 1950's.
