Newport is a Census-designated place in York County, South Carolina. Most of Newport is annexed into the city of Rock Hill, while parts are still located in York County, but Newport is still considered to be a CDP. During the 2000 Census, the population was 4,033.

Geography

Newport is located at 34°59′3″N 81°5′33″W / 34.98417°N 81.0925°W / 34.98417; -81.0925 (34.984084, -81.092563)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.9 square miles (23.2 km²), all of is land.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 4,033 people, 1,381 households, and 1,180 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 450.4 people per square mile (174.0/km²). There were 1,437 housing units at an average density of 160.5/sq mi (62.0/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 90.50% White, 7.51% African American, 0.62% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.40% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.

There were 1,381 households out of which 45.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 75.2% were married couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 14.5% were non-families. 12.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.92 and the average family size was 3.18.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 6.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $59,564, and the median income for a family was $67,212. Males had a median income of $45,167 versus $27,594 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $24,237. About 0.7% of families and 1.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under the age of eighteen or sixty-five or over.
