Playing career

Club

Burns played his club hurling with the famous St. Finbarr's club on the southside of Cork city. He enjoyed some success at underage levels before joining the club's senior team in the early 1970s. He captured his first senior county title in 1974. Later that year Burns later won a Munster club title before collecting his first All-Ireland club title following a victory over the Fenians of Kilkenny. In 1977 Burns was captain of the team as 'the Barr's' captured another county title. Once again, he later collected both Munster and All-Ireland club honours. 1980 saw Burns win a third county medal before later colelcting a third Munster club title. Unfortunately, his side were later defeated in the All-Ireland final by Ballyhale Shamrocks. He added further county medals to his collection in 1981 and 1982.

Inter-county

Burns had little success at minor level for Cork, however, the early 1970s saw him join the Cork under-21 hurling team. In 1973 he won a Munster title in this grade before later collecting an All-Ireland title following a victory over Wexford. Burns later joined the Cork senior panel, however, he found it difficult to break onto the team. Apart from some appearances in the National League he only made four appearances in the championship for Cork. Burns made his debut in the All-Ireland semi-final against Galway in 1975. He won two senior Munster titles on the field of play in 1976 and 1978 as well as being a non-playing substitute in Cork's three in-a-row of championship titles in 1976, 1977 and 1978. Burns also captured a National Hurling League title in 1980 before retiring from inter-county hurling.

Post-playing career

In retirement from playing Burns remained involved in the game of hurling. He was the coach of the Cork minor hurling team in 1998 and guided the team to both Munster and All-Ireland honours in his first year in charge.
