Kahlotus is a city in Franklin County, Washington, United States. The population was 214 at the 2000 census.

History

The first recorded settler of the area was a man named Jon harder, who arrived in the 1890s. In 1901, he platted a settlement called Hardersburg. The town was later renamed Kahlotus, a Native American word meaning "Hole in the ground". Kahlotus was officially incorporated on May 31, 1907. Early settlers grew wheat near a spring-fed lake named Washtucna lake (later renamed Kahlotus Lake). The completion of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project in 1948 ensured continued growth in agricultural products and livestock. Wheat and other crops had done well before, but with a reliable source of water the land could produce more. Dryland farming continues as the major crop today.

In 1969, the initial phase of the Lower Monumental Dam was completed nearby, bringing more electricity and water for irrigation, but inundating the nearby Marmes Rockshelter.
