History

The International Society for Medical Education Pvt. Ltd (ISME Pvt. Ltd) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) of His Majesty’s Government of Nepal (HMG-Nepal) signed an agreement on 8 August 1993 giving birth to the International Institute of Medical Science (IMIS) at Bharatpur, Chitwan which has undergone a lot of modifications and changes for the need-based health care system of Nepal, in particular to Tarai areas. After necessary reorientation, the medical college was re-established as the College of Medical Sciences (CMS) under the aegis of ISME Pvt. Ltd and started operating afresh from 14 December 1995 under the leadership of Professor of Pagadala Rajaram MD DSS PHD (formerly Deputy Director General, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India) who was the first principal of the college. He was the Chief Executive Officer of ISME (P) Ltd. Subsequently the first batch of 100 students were granted affiliation and recognition, renewable every year, by KU and NMC respectively in mid-1996. From mid-1998 till the end of 1999 Professor R Ramaswamy MS (Surgery) served as the principal. He was the past principal of the Government Medical College, Tirupati and the additional director of Medical Education, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, India. The institution is now headed by Professor AC Patowary FRCPE; DPH (Edin). Formerly professor and head of the Department of Community Medicine, director of Medical Education, Planning & Research, Director of Health Services, Government of Assam, India. Presently as on january 2011 the principal is Dr. PVS Rana DM(neurology).

With the modern concept of globalization of medical education as well as hospital care of the patients, the College of Medical Sciences has endeavored to educate the undergraduates with the objective of producing medical personnel of high quality. This institution being premiere medical college in the heart of Nepal; besides having very eminent and experienced faculty who are endowed with international fame indulge with a curriculum which is student centered and has learning objectives of wide ranges of subjects. The curriculum is horizontally and vertically integrated and passive lectures are meager. Problem based learning is emphasized and encouraged among the students. Today, the medical college boasts of a highly qualified and experienced faculty mostly from neighboring countries and already five batches have passed out and there are now four batches of students on the rolls from various regions of Nepal, India and SAARC countries.

A landmark, in the history of CMS was the inauguration of the CMS Teaching Hospital on 21 January 1999 by the dynamic present Managing Director Mr. Nagender Pampati. This has revolutionized the healthcare scenario in this region with a combination of clinical expertise and advanced diagnostic facilities. The first Medical Superindent of the Teaching Hospital was Prof. G. Thippana, M.D.,(Medicine) and now it has been taken over by Prof. B.N,Patowary, M.S., (Surgery) the Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery. Links have already been established with the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh and some of the American Colleges for enhancing the training and service programmes in the college. Further collaborative efforts with International Universities are underway for the purpose of academic co-operation in the teaching of undergraduate and post graduate medical students. The CMS as it stands today, is a successful maiden attempt of the ISME Pvt. Ltd., affiliated to Kathmandu University and fully recognized by the Nepal Medical Council, premiere medical institution with high standards in the fields of academics, healthcare and research. The institution has full potential to develop into a center of excellence for medical and superspeciality care both nationally and internationally.

Mission and vision

The International Society for Medical Education Pvt. Ltd has envisaged making the college, a Centre of Excellence with super specialty services for training medical, paramedical health functionaries and Nurses so that they can serve the population of Nepal with confidence and competence to alleviate their sufferings. It has several other ambitious plans for future, keeping in view of the health care needs of the country for the 21st century and to provide extension services to the rural areas.

The ISME is committed to the services of the humanity and determined to fulfill its objectives by being a partner of the health structures of the country.

The vision and the wisdom of the Members of the ISME Pvt. Ltd. is to bring the advanced technology from the far West for the benefit of the medical education in Nepal. Acceptance and liberalization policy on the part of the HMG/Nepal with sole objective of giving the best to the poor and needy people of Nepal is an example of international cooperation which will bear the fruits soon and will contribute towards socio-economic development of this country and in particular that of the Chitwan district.

With the faculty and staff of this Institution no matter whether the Nepali, Indian or from any other parts of the world have decided to give their might with dedication and devotion to this Institution and see through that it flourishes and be able to serve the community in a rational and scientific manner.

General objectives

  • to produce quality clinicians and able managers for primary level health care and facilitate to bring in optimum health care services required for the local community right at their door steps.
  • to produce clinicians of specialties to provide appropriate and correct health care delivery system.
  • to assist the Government to promote and standardize Medical Education and produce appropriate manpower for fulfillment on its obligation to the community.
  • to make the future doctors understand the psycho-social needs of the community and to conduct research, thus make them capable of pursuing postgraduate courses and developing cost effective health care services.
  • to prepare the students to understand and promote other systems of medicine to develop and appreciate philosophical and ethical values of these medicine.
  • to prepare the Institution to take active part in building the health care delivery system of Nepal in general and the Chitwan district in particular.

Specific objectives

  • to prepare the medical students capable of becoming competent primary physicians
  • to prepare the medical students capable of becoming leaders and better managers in the community health services.
  • to create awareness among the students to plan and execute preventive, promotive and curative health care measures in the community.
  • to prepare the medical students capable of identifying the appropriate patients to refer to higher center at the right time.
  • to train the medical students capable of handling emergencies at their work stations by proper handling of the situations to save the lives in time.
  • to prepare the medical students capable of imparting health education.
  • to motivate the students to conduct community based research in the areas of preventable diseases and recommend measures for their control and eradication.
  • to motivate the students to specialize in the subjects where there is acute shortage of medical teachers
  • to sensitize the students to understand and appreciate the psycho-social aspects of patients and deal accordingly.
