Gillette is a city in and the
county seatof Campbell County, Wyoming, United States.GR|6 The population was 19,646 at the 2000 census. Because Gillette is centrally located in an area that is vital to the development of vast quantities of American coal, oil, and coal bed methane gas, the city proudly calls itself the "Energy Capital of the Nation".
Gillette is the hometown of
U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, a conservativeRepublican who is also a former mayorof Gillette and member of both houses of the Wyoming State Legislature.
Gillette is located at coor dms|44|16|58|N|105|30|19|W|city (44.282660, -105.505256)GR|1. It is situated between the
Big Horn Mountainsto the west and the Black Hillsto the east, in the Powder River Basin.
According to the
United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.4 square miles (34.7 km²), of which, 13.4 square miles (34.6 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.15%) is water.

censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 19,646 people, 7,390 households, and 5,113 families residing in the city. The population densitywas 1,469.5 people per square mile (567.3/km²). There were 7,931 housing units at an average density of 593.2/sq mi (229.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.50% White, 0.20% African American, 0.96% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 1.31% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.94% of the population.
There were 7,390 households out of which 41.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% were non-families. 24.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city the population was spread out with 30.2% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 31.7% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 6.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 103.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $46,521, and the median income for a family was $52,383. Males had a median income of $41,131 versus $22,717 for females. The
per capita incomefor the city was $19,749. About 5.7% of families and 7.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 14.1% of those age 65 or over.
Gillette has one newspaper, The Gillette News-Record. Established in 1904, it serves all of Campbell County.
It also has one local television station, Gillette Public Access, that operates three cable channels; one for Public Access, one for Educational programming and one for Governmental programming.
The city is also home to
Gillette-Campbell County Airportwhich is served by Great Lakes Airlines, a Frontier and United partner. They currently operate 5 flights to and from Denver each day. Completion is slated in mid-summer 2008 for the new Wyoming Center, a 9,000 seat arena located at the Cam-Plex just east of the city.
