Rüdiger Wolfrum (born
December 13th ,1941 inBerlin ) is the President of theInternational Tribunal for the Law of the Sea , professor ofinternational law at theUniversity of Heidelberg , and Director of the Heidelberg Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law.Educated at the universities of Tübingen and Bonn, he served as Vice President of the German Research Foundation from 1996 to 2002, and as Vice President of the
Max Planck Society from 2002 to 2006. In 1996, he was appointed Justice at theInternational Tribunal for the Law of the Sea ; since 2005 he serves as its president. Mr. Wolfrum is President of the German Society for International Law, and he has also been a member of numerous national and international councils and academies, such as the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Besides his numerous offices, he currently instructs the High Justices ofAfghanistan andSudan , and he acts as aUnited Nations mediator in theDarfur conflict . He holdshonorary degrees of theRussian Academy of Sciences , of the Mongolian Shihutug Law College, and of theUniversity of Hamburg . In 2008, he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of theFederal Republic of Germany .
