Michael "Mike" McCarthy (born London, England, 27 November 1981) is a professional rugby union player. He plays provincial rugby for Connacht. He can play as a second row or flanker.

Career

McCarthy joined Connacht for the beginning of the 2003-04 season, where the highlight was reaching the European Challenge Cup semi final against Harlequins. From Connacht he joined Newcastle Falcons and stayed there from 2004 to 2007, where he helped them reach the Heineken Cup quarter final at Parc des Princes and was named the supporters' player of the season in 2006. McCarthy rejoined Connacht at the beginning of the 2007-08 season. He earned his 100th cap for Connacht against Bayonne on 15 January 2011 in the European Challenge Cup.[1]

International Representation

In January 2011, McCarthy was called up to the Ireland squad for the 2011 Six Nations Championship, he was the only uncapped player named in the squad and it was his first callup.[2][3]

In August 2011, McCarthy made his Ireland debut in a World Cup warm-up game against Scotland at Murrayfield.[4][5]
