The village is approximately equidistant between the two closest railway stations of Shenfield and Ingatestone.

Mountnessing is most noted for its windmill and for the parish church of St Giles. An annual village fete in held in July. In the "Windmill" field there is also a village hall, cricket pitch, football pitches and tennis courts (members only). In the 1970s the children's football team the Mountnessing Millers played here. Players included Colin Gordon, Mitchell and Warren Ball, Darren Brooks, John Wastenage, Timothy Holland as well as three of the Brocklehurst brothers Matt, Barny and Ben.

It has 3 pubs, The George and Dragon, The Plough and the Prince of Wales, a butcher and an Indian restaurant.
