Randolph is a town and a census-designated place (CDP) in Kennebec County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,911 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Randolph is located at coor dms|44|14|5|N|69|45|26|W|city (44.234914, -69.757226).GR|1

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.8 km²), of which, 2.1 square miles (5.5 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (4.48%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,911 people, 829 households, and 536 families residing in the town. The population density was 897.6 people per square mile (346.4/km²). There were 884 housing units at an average density of 415.2/sq mi (160.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.23% White, 0.47% Black or African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.26% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.84% of the population.

There were 829 households out of which 30.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.4% were married couples living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.82.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $31,046, and the median income for a family was $38,920. Males had a median income of $31,196 versus $20,313 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,742. About 9.1% of families and 10.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.2% of those under age 18 and 12.2% of those age 65 or over.

Transportation

Randolph is situated at the eastern bank of the Kennebec River at the opposite side of Gardiner, linked with that city via a road bridge. The river was navigable up to Waterville until the Edwards Dam was built. From 1890 to 1929 the Kennebec Central Railroad ran from Randolph to the National Soldiers' Home in Togus.
