Bean's Purchase, New Hampshire

Bean's Purchase is a township in Coos County, New Hampshire, United States. In New Hampshire, locations, grants, townships (which are different from towns), and purchases are unincorporated portions of a county which are not part of any town and have limited self-government (if any, as many are uninhabited).

As of the 2000 census the population was four. It is part of the Berlin, NH–VT Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

In 1851 the New Hampshire state legislature authorized the governor and council to appoint a land commissioner to sell the public lands, and James Willey of Conway was appointed to that office. Bean's Purchase was made by Commissioner Willey to Alpheus Bean of Bartlett in 1812 for $1,025 and contained about convert|59000|acre|km2.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the purchase has a total area of convert|65.3|sqmi|km2, of which convert|0.04|sqmi|km2|abbr=on, or 0.03%, is water. The highest point in Bean's Purchase is the summit of Carter Dome, at convert|4832|ft|m above sea level.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were four people, three households, and no families residing in the purchase. The population density was minuscule. There were three housing units. The racial makeup of the purchase was 100.00% white.

There were 3 households out of which none have children under the age of 18 living with them, one is a married couple living together, none have a female householder with no husband present, and two are non-families. Two of the households are made up of individuals, and two have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.33 and the average family size was two.

In the purchase the population was spread out with 50.0% from 25 to 44, and 50.0% 65 years of age or older. The median age was 60 years. Men outnumbered women three to one.
