Barangaroo is an inner-city suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located on the north-western edge of the Sydney central business district and the south-western end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney.

Barangaroo was an intiative of the Government of New South Wales to provide more recreational area for a growing Sydney population. [ [http://www.barangaroo.com/ Barangaroo ] ]

History

The suburb was named to honour Barangaroo, an important indigenous woman from Sydney's early history who was a powerful and colourful figure in the colonisation of Australia. [ [http://www.gnb.nsw.gov.au/name_search/extract?id=MnqwZxUlKW Extract - Geographical Names Board ] ] She was also the wife of Bennelong, another important indigenous figure after whom Bennelong Point is named, the site of the Sydney Opera House. The name was submitted in 2006 by Nigel Dawe, winner of a public competition to name the area

Barangaroo comprises the now defunct shipping port and most of the suburb formerly known as Millers Point. The area had also been nicknamed "The Hungry Mile" by harbourside workers during the Great Depression. Workers would walk from wharf to wharf in search of a job, often failing to find one.

World Youth Day

In 2008, before the site was redeveloped, Barangaroo was a World Youth Day 2008 site used for the opening mass for an estimated 150,000 people, concerts, a re-enactment of the Stations of the Cross and for the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI to Sydney.

Redevelopment

As stevedoring operations moved to ports at Port Botany and Port Kembla, the Government of New South Wales determined that this site should be renewed as an extension of the Sydney CBD with a significant new foreshore park providing recreational areas for a growing Sydney population.
