Lindsay is a city in Garvin County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,889 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Lindsay is located at coor dms|34|50|14|N|97|36|27|W|city (34.837280, -97.607537)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000,GR|2 there were 2,889 people, 1,244 households, and 794 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,231.9 people per square mile (474.7/km²). There were 1,446 housing units at an average density of 616.6/sq mi (237.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.86% White, 0.14% African American, 4.92% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 3.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.25% of the population.

There were 1,244 households out of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.1% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.1% were non-families. 34.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 25.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 81.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $26,667, and the median income for a family was $35,208. Males had a median income of $26,831 versus $18,207 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,320. About 9.9% of families and 15.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.4% of those under age 18 and 12.5% of those age 65 or over.

*Jack C. Estes - author: (born February 11, 1922, died December 1, 1975). Authored "Real Estate License Preparation Course For The Uniform Examinations", "Compound Interest & Annuity Tables", and "Interest Amortization Tables", all published nationwide by McGraw-Hill in 1975. Mr. Estes served as a navigator and gunner in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.
