History

Chamberlain College of Nursing was first established in St. Louis in 1889, under the name Deaconess School of Nursing. The Deaconess tradition began in 19th-Century Europe when Theodore Fliedner of Kaiserswerth, Germany, established the first Deaconess Home and Hospital in 1836. The word deaconess means “one who is devoted to service.”

The college was originally established as a nurses’ training program associated with the United Church of Christ’s Deaconess Hospital. It became Deaconess College of Nursing in the early 1980s. In March 2005, DeVry, Inc. acquired Deaconess. A term of the acquisition agreement was that DeVry's use of the Deaconess name would expire as of September 30, 2006. The school was later renamed to Chamberlain College of Nursing.

Chamberlain has since evolved from a diploma school of nursing to a college of nursing. It offers undergraduate nursing degree programs at campuses in Phoenix, AZ; Jacksonville, FL; Mirmar, FL; Addison, IL; Chicago, IL; St. Louis, MO; Columbus, OH; Houston, TX; Arlington, VA and online. Chamberlain also offers an RN-BSN to MSN Online Bridge Option and a Master of Science in Nursing online degree program.

Programs

Chamberlain College of Nursing offers undergraduate programs enabling students to earn either an Associate Degree in Nursing (available in Columbus, OH only) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (available at all campus locations). The BSN degree program does not require any prior experience and allows students to complete their degree in as few as 3 years, instead of the typical four years with summers off.

Chamberlain's Second Degree BSN Option is an accelerated program of study available to adults who have already earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university. The Second Degree BSN uses the same curriculum as the three-year BSN, and allows adults to apply credits from an existing bachelor’s degree so they may earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in as few as 13 months.

Chamberlain also offers a RN to BSN online degree completion program for registered nurses. This online program allows registered nurses to earn a BSN degree in as few as 3 semesters. The program offers the flexibility of online learning with no on-site clinical requirements.

The RN-BSN to MSN Online Bridge Option is for RNs who wish to earn both a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and Master of Science in Nursing degree (MSN). The program allows students to earn a MSN degree in one less semester.

Chamberlain also offers a Master of Science in Nursing online degree program with three tracks: Educator,Executive, or Nursing Informatics. Each track allows registered nurses to earn an MSN degree in as few as 6 semesters. The Educator Track includes courses designed to prepare students to teach in an academic or clinical-practice setting. Courses in the MSN Educator track include educational foundations, instructional methods, program assessment and evaluation, and curriculum development.

The Executive Track This program allows registered nurses to earn an MSN degree in as few as 6 semesters. The Executive track helps build the skills essential to nurse leaders. Courses in the MSN Executive track include the foundations of organizational leadership, including managerial communication, organizational change, and decision-making. All MSN students are required to complete a 100-hour practicum in their own geographic location. Graduates of the MSN Executive Track have the option to apply to DeVry University’s Keller Graduate School of Management Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program. Qualifying Chamberlain credits transfer so students can earn their MBA with six additional courses.

The Informatics specialty track builds the foundational skills essential to informatics nurse specialists. Courses in the MSN Informatics specialty track include the practice of nursing informatics, management of data and information, and healthcare information workflow and project management. Students also learn to interpret, analyze and utilize electronic health record technology, as well as ways to provide greater efficiency and effectiveness in healthcare practices.
