The tin bowl with chicken in it later were filled with rice and steamed until cooked. The dish usually served with light chicken brooth soup with chopped leeks.

Although it commonly uses chicken, some variants may also uses pork, fish or beef as the substitute of chicken. The serving method is as follows; the nasi tim in metal bowls (made from tin, aluminium or stainless steel) usually kept in the steamer to keep it always hot, it is served by placing the tin bowl against a plate and the bowl's content will be printed upon the plate. Because this food is always served hot — just like chicken soup — nasi tim is known as one of the comfort food in Chinese Indonesian culture. The soft texture of rice and boneless chicken also make this dish suitable for baby or sick and recovering people. Usually the nasi tim for babies were made form red rice and chicken liver.
